The recent episode of 9-1-1 is set on Halloween, one of the busiest times of the year, and the show's favorite first responders are ready to rescue anyone in distress. However, the episode took a spookier turn as the Halloween celebration was interrupted by a tragic accident involving Denny Wilson, played by Declan Pratt.
In an unexpected turn of events in episode 5 of the eighth season of the series, titled Masks, Denny fell victim to a driver losing control and crashing into a house. Denny didn't die in 9-1-1, but his near-fatal accident left Hen, played by Aisha Hinds, who was a first responder at the time in the trenches. The tense several minutes as Hen tries to revive Denny also leave the viewers on the edge of their seats.
Denny's near-fatal accident may not be the only accident in the series, but his case hits close to home for the show's main characters. The series also stars Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, and Jennifer Love Hewitt and follows them as first responders thrust into some of the most shocking, heart-stopping situations.

Denny survives after a near-death experience in 9-1-1 season 8 episode 5
The latest episode of 9-1-1 season 8 is all about the Halloween celebration, and while everyone is excited to go trick-and-treating, Hen comes home to Karen with some disappointing news. She won't be able to get a day off, and Karen is understandably upset.
Fast forward to Halloween night, and Hen misses one of the biggest moments of Denny's life. Meanwhile, Karen takes Denny, Jee-Yun, and Mara trick-or-treating, but their fun evening turns tense when a driver chasing a group of pranksters loses control of the car. His wheels swerve before crashing into a house and pinning one of the trick-or-treaters.
When the 118 arrive on the scene, they swiftly swing into action. Chimney and Hen were the first responders, and the latter was shocked to see that Denny was the trick-or-treater trapped by the car. She's visibly panicked as they remove the vehicle to rescue Denny and find that he's in really bad shape.
Initially, they are not able to detect Denny's pulse, but Hen's quick thinking of doing a field blood transfusion using Karen's blood allows them to buy him some time. After he appears to come around after some desperate chest compressions, the team works on getting Denny into the ambulance and to the hospital.
Despite the tense moments there, the end of 9-1-1 season 8 episode 5 showed that Denny gets into the hospital in time for surgery, and everything goes well. In the end, Hen is there to save Denny's life. Karen tells her that she was happy Hen was at work at the time because she was there to help save Denny.
What 9-1-1 boss Tim Minear has to say about Denny's near-death experience
While Denny did survive in the end, his near-fatal accident put a lot of people on edge. That includes his parents, Hen and Karen, but they aren't the only ones tense as the tragic accident plays out. The procedural drama's showrunner, Tim Minear, said that the episode also left him on edge. He told Parade on October 24:
"Even when I was cutting the episode, when I was in the editing room, when I got to that scene when the music stops, when they're trying to save Danny with the blood transfusion, I thought he was going to die. I made it, but when I got there, I was like, 'Wow, this feels so dire.'"
However, the 9-1-1 boss explained that Denny's near-fatal moment was a key in the episode, especially around what Karen told Hen in the hospital room, that she's glad Hen was at work during the accident.
New episodes of 9-1-1 air on ABC on Thursdays or stream on Hulu one day after its television premiere.
