The Dune: Prophecy season finale premiered on Max on December 22, 2024, and brought a close to season 1 of the show. Titled The High-Handed Enemy, the episode saw a lot go down while also setting up the upcoming conflicts for season 2 as well. Most importantly, it delved further into why exactly Tula had to give Desmond away and what the source of his powers are.

In the Dune: Prophecy season finale, it was revealed that Tula gave Desmond away after being born as she wanted him to forge his path - one that wasn't shaped by Valya and the Sisterhood's plans. The episode also revealed that the source of Desmond's powers wasn't Shai-Hulud, but rather someone implanted Thinking Machines.

What happened in the Dune: Prophecy season finale?

Tula and Desmond's backstory explored

The Dune: Prophecy season finale dives deep into exactly why Tula had to give away Desmond. After Valya murdered Dorotea, Tula revealed to her that she was pregnant with Orry Atreides' child. Valya told her that once she is Mother Superior, she will change the rules and allow Tula to be with her kid. Valya then took Tula to the genetic room of the Sisterhood and it was foreseen that her son's life would be extraordinary and be shaped by the Sisterhood.

However, Tula wanted her son to be free and not have his life be controlled by the Sisterhood. After she gave birth to Desmond, she immediately gave him away and told Valya that the child died during birth. This is pretty much why Desmond hates the Sisterhood as he feels betrayed by his mother as well.

How did Desmond get his powers?

In the show, it is revealed that Desmond Hart was given a great gift by Shai-Hulud after he was swallowed by the worm. The power saw him have the ability to burn a person from the inside, but the show never further explained exactly how his powers worked and why Shai-Hulud chose him. However, the Dune: Prophecy season finale answers this question.

In episode 5 it was revealed that Desmond Hart was emitting a virus, and the Dune: Prophecy season finale makes it clear that the virus feeds off fear. However, it wasn't Shai-Hulud who gave him his powers, rather he had a Thinking Machine implanted within him. Who did this to him remains unknown, however, this was revealed when he tried infecting Valya with it and she saw his memories.

So, it looks like someone is working to take the Sisterhood down and is currently planning their downfall too. While the identity of them remains unknown, fans can certainly expect to see it revealed in season 2 of the show.

The death of Javicco and Sister Francesca

The Dune: Prophecy season finale also sees the death of Javicco Corrino and Sister Francesca take place. The episode begins with Javicco learning that Ynez has been arrested after she tried setting Keira Atreides free. Enraged by this, Javicco confronts his wife who threatens him with Desmond Hart. She then claims that her council will be given more importance from now on.

With Javicco's growing faith in the Sisterhood again, he asks Francesca to arrange a meeting with Valya. However, Valya has different plans as she needs to ensure that Ynez is set free. She also assigns Francesca to kill Corrino as he is no longer fit to be an Emperor. Valya then has herself arrested after she reveals to Corrino that everything that has happened in life was controlled by the Sisterhood.

Taken over by the grief of never having experienced freedom, Javicco kills himself in front of Francesca. At the same time, Natalya comes from the back and murders Francesca as well. So, going forward it certainly looks like Natalya will have more power within the Imperium.

The Dune: Prophecy season finale also sees the Sisterhood turn on Valya Harkonnen. When Mother Dorotea comes back to life through Lila, she then reveals Valya's deep secrets to the entire Sisterhood by draining the well of the water. There are the bodies of everyone who was killed by Valya as they were Dorotea's followers.

With Dorotea back now, it looks like season 2 of the show will focus on how Valya's teachings at the Sisterhood won't be looked at the same way anymore.

A tease to Arrakis

The Dune: Prophecy season finale also teases that Arrakis will be a major focus of season 2 of the show. After saving Ynez and Keiran and learning more about Desmond's powers, Valya believes that their true enemy lies in Arrakis as this is where he may have been implanted with the Thinking Machine, and it definitely looks like season 2 of the show will take place over there.

At the end of season 1, Tula reunites with Desmond and embraces him as well. While Desmond embraces her back too, he does arrest her teasing that there will be more interactions between the two in the next season as well.

As for now, fans can stream Dune: Prophecy Season 1 on Max.
