Earth Abides episode 1 recap
The pilot episode of Earth Abides titled Alone started by introducing Ish Williams, a geologist staying in a remote cabin in the woods. He is researching a particular type of stone containing a mineral called Pyrite. Ish is seen constantly ignoring calls from his parents and treks to the mountains in search of more rocks.
But right when he is picking some of the rocks from the crevices, he is suddenly bitten by a rattlesnake, which sends him into a state of panic. He slips the phone into the crevice, unable to make an emergency call, and quickly rushes to his cabin, dropping unconscious on his bed. Over the next few days, Ish slips in and out of his consciousness, hallucinating with the venom's effect.
By the time he recovers, it becomes clear that several days have gone by, where Ish jokingly comments himself to be Rip Van Winkle. This stands as a very strong symbolism to the story of Earth Abides. By the time Ish completely drives to the city to run errands, he discovers piles of dead bodies on the street. The remaining radio stations of the car provide him with the idea that the majority of Earth's population has been wiped up by a deadly virus, causing a pandemic.
Ish reaches home, only to find both of his parents dead, with their bodies starting to decompose. Ish buries the body and embarks on a journey to look for any survivors. He encounters two survivors, Ann and Milton, at a hotel in Las Vegas, which explains to him how the virus was resistant to vaccinations, and people started dropping dead in major chunks.
Ish also discerns that all three of them have immunity to fight against the virus, and it is highly possible that there are more survivors left. Ish urges them to join him to look for other remaining survivors, however, the two have lost all their hope in life. Ish decides to continue the journey on his own. But right after he leaves the hotel premises, he hears two gunshots indicating that Ann and Milton have killed themselves.
This shatters his will completely, and he speeds up the car on the highway road, intending to kill himself, too. However, he is stopped by a friendly dog in the middle of the road, who has survived the pandemic, too. Ish finds a new companion and begins to consider starting a new life in the post-apocalyptic world. Ish spends a year in his parent's home, building a life around himself and his dog named Lucky.
While going out swimming and on long runs, looking for books around the public library, and scavenging for resources, Ish tries to deal with the loneliness, trying his best not to lose his sanity. By the very end of Earth Abides episode 1, Ish sees a gust of smoke blowing at a distance from his balcony. The episode ends right leaving the possibility, that there are more survivors left still.
What to expect from Earth Abides episode 2
In the official trailer of Earth Abides, viewers can see that Ish meets a surviving woman named Emma, with whom he starts a family. The series is based on George R. Stewart's 1949 book of the same name. In the book too it has been clearly mentioned that Ish finds a woman named Emma, with whom he has children.
Eventually, they meet new survivors and start a new civilization together, who learn to sustain themselves in old ways with simpler tools. In the book, Ish eventually succeeds in restarting humanity back again, bringing people together. Hence, viewers can expect to see Ish finding more survivors in Earth Abides episode 2.
However, this new journey comes with its own dangers, since the scarcity of resources, is likely to bring back barbaric instincts of rage and murder on the surface back again. Episode 2 is likely to document Ish starting his search back again, after a year of hiatus, and his encounter with Emma will majorly contribute to the future of the series.
