The ending of Earth Abides episode 3 shifts the time 14 years later after the apocalypse, on the day of Heather's 14th birthday. It ends with a cliffhanger when Ish is clawed and torn apart by a mountain lion while trying to save Evie and his son, Jorge.

Earth Abides episode 3 provides hope for a new civilization.
The episode begins six years later, with Ish traveling through the woods while going through errands and picking fruits. He hits a baby mountain lion. With his car in between the road, he is gravely injured. Ish comes out of the car and points his loaded rifle on the animal to end its suffering. However, he stops himself from killing the lion upon realizing that a little girl is watching her from the woods.
Realizing she is a surviving girl who needs help, Ish decides to follow her but the girl runs away, considering him to be an enemy. He finally chases her down and offers her food and a place to stay. Upon realizing, Ish surrenders himself, the girl puts down her guard and follows him to his tow truck reluctantly.
But the baby mountain lion suddenly vanishes from the scene, and Ish drives the girl to his home with the supplies. The viewers see that Ish and Emma have another baby boy named Alex, while Heather is grown up. Emma is seen pregnant with another kid on the way. The audiences are introduced to another couple, now living with them named Jorge and Maurine.
It can be seen that the two couples have learned to co-exist with each other. Jorge and Maurine turn out to be the survivors, looking at the town hall graffiti at the end of Earth Abides episode 3.
The girl initially refuses to come out from the cargo bed of the pickup truck. Ish initially thinks that the girl has been separated from her family of survivors. They mutually decide to revisit the woods the next day to look for the group she had been separated from.
However, when Ish and Jorge go inside the woods and find a rotting dead body in an isolated cabin, they realize the girl is now their responsibility. Maurine tries to build a connection with the girl since both of them have experienced physical abuse in the past. She fills the bathtub for the girl to bath, and she hesitantly accepts to clean herself.
While making the bed for the girl, Maurine finds a backpack where she retrieves some very disturbing sketches, and then a letter from the girl's mother, which shatters her down completely. The letter reveals that the girl's name is Evie, and she had suffered her father's rigorous abuse, which restricted her from talking completely.
In her mother's final moments, she had written a letter requesting anyone who finds her alive to accept her and provide her with nutrition, a home, and a family. Maurine reveals Evie's past to other members of the group, and they decide to say a 'yes' to Evie in their home. Maurine is deeply touched after realizing another girl has been through what she had experienced once. Even after Jorge's interrogation, she denies opening up about it.
The episode then slowly shifts to the time, when Emma mothers her third child, whom she names Joey. While celebrating Joey's first birthday, they encounter some unnoticed intruders in their territory. After an initial discord, the intruders eventually surrender their weapons, clarifying that they had lost their child earlier and they mean no harm.
Additionally, they mention that they had seen the aforementioned graffiti advertisement on the town square, which led them here, looking for any remaining survivors. The survivors introduce themselves as Jean, Ezra, and Molly. Eventually, a child appears which proves their claim to be true. The child Rafe is Jean and Ezra's son, and Molly calls herself the stepmother.
Jean used to be a popular singer, whom Emma exhilaratingly recognizes. Jean used to be a singer in a club, which was owned by Ezra, where they two previously met. Molly used to be a doctor, which immediately proved herself to be an important asset. Ish gets suspicious of the new intruders and is hesitant about letting them stay in their neighboring house.
But since they have a kid, and Molly as a physician, they see the latter as a crucial asset to the group. So, Emma convinces Ish to let them stay. The group soon starts proving themselves to be a worthy addition, and Ish is convinced to take the three on a supply run. Since the time he built the community, Ish has laid down some strict rules to follow while going on a supply run.
Though Jorge has always followed Ish's rules, the new three members find it very difficult to do so. Ezra finds it utterly difficult to abide by Ish's orders, however, the two bond over their sour relationship. In between the errands, Jean starts looking for alcohol, while Molly gets attacked by a rabid dog. Despite Ish's strict timing rule, Molly somehow succeeds in retrieving a bunch of medicine from the remaining storage unit.
To celebrate their achievement, the entire unit bonds together over a campfire party, where Jean finally sings after a long time, with a guitar Ezra picked up for her on the supply run. Later in the night, Jean gulps down the entire bottle of liquor she retrieved from the shop, indicating that she suffered drug and alcohol abuse in the past.
Molly catches her in that spot, and that is when it is revealed that Jean is pregnant, and she doesn't want to bring another child into the world. Molly comforts Jean, assuring her that they can together bring and raise a new life, into this world. While the same night Maurine finally lets her guard down after Jorge reveals to her about his past.
The next day on Earth Abides, Jorge gifts Ish a hammer, as a mark of their friendship, and portrays his gratefulness. Time passes by, and all of them finally learn to live together as a community. Finally, Jean and Maurine give birth to their respective children, and for a few years, all of them together nurture a healthy relationship, co-existing with each other.
Lucky is killed in the storm
Earth Abides episode 3 makes another long-time jump, shifting to the 14th year after the apocalypse. All the children are finally growing up, and the scene starts with everyone celebrating Heather's birthday. It can be seen that Evie still doesn't speak, however, she seems much more comfortable around her newfound family.
Out of all the kids, Joey is the only one who has inherited Ish's love for reading. During one of the father-son trips to the public library, a violent storm hits San Francisco, prompting Ish and Joe to rush back home. They have sustained a couple of similar storms earlier, and they are confident that their houses will withstand the storm. However, Ish soon realizes that Lucky is not inside.
Ish rushes off to the storm and scream their pet's name Lucky, similar to what happened back during the rat's plague. However, he is shattered down to see that his oldest friend, Lucky, has been crushed down beneath an uprooted tree branch. Emma too runs out into the storm, both of them realizing that Lucky is dead.
Earth Abides episode 3 jumps into the near future on a regular afternoon while Jorge and Ish converse about their journey together over some carpentry. Ish then goes to take a look at Joey and Evie playing in the park. Right when Ish reaches the scene, he notices a grown-up mountain lion on the verge of attacking Joey.
Ish immediately jumps into the situation, saving both the kids, and directing its attention towards him. The lion soon overpowers Ish and begins clawing on his face and tearing his flesh apart. This major shock breaks Evie's silence after decades and she starts screaming for help from everyone. Earth Abides episode 3 immediately ends, leaving audiences wondering if Ish is going to survive the attack.
