The sixth episode of Earth Abides starts in Year 20, with Heather talking about her journey with Raif. She says the couple refused to follow their family's words to return before winter. They drove towards the North together but failed to see any other living person on their journey. Every town or city they reached, had been deserted, with nature slowly taking back its control.

The couple finally camped near a beach, and felt they wanted to settle right there. The two were happy, enjoying their time with each other in complete bliss, with both making a promise to be together always. Strangely, on their trial, the pair started finding arrows painted in red, everywhere they went. Each arrow comprised two written digits, directing to a place.

The young couple decided to follow the arrows, but it led them only to dead ends. In Earth Abides episode 6, after deviating a long way from their original route, the couple decided to settle on a ground, right on the edge of a dangerous cliff. They decided this to be their last spot before they returned home. In the woods, they meet a strange bearded man, who threatens Raif with a knife, for Heather to hand him all the food.

However, Raif tries to escape, and the man fatally stabs him. Though Heather kills the man with a hammer, she fails to save Raif. After providing him with a decent burial, Heather heads back home alone. Her jeep malfunctions on the way, and she makes her way back to San Lupo, by walking on feet. After reaching home, Heather realizes that the bearded man who had killed Raif is Silas, who was banished away from the community in Earth Abides episode 5.

The knife that killed Raif was the same one Ish had returned to him back before he was forced to leave the community. Earth Abides episode 6 then shifts back to Joey, who is still struggling with the Illness. His brain gets foggy and begins to hallucinate that his father has given up on his chances of surviving. However, Ish returns from the city hospital, with only one way left.

Ish tries to infuse his blood into Joey's system, with the hope of transferring his immunity to his son's system. Heather requests his dad to wait and give Molly enough time to make an antidote for the disease. Meanwhile, the scene shifts to Jean, who had broken her vow of not taking alcohol. She takes a shot, in honor of her son, however, stops right there, preventing her from getting consumed by her grief completely.

When Joey's fever gets more terrible, Ish manages to get him an ice bath to cool him down, with the help of Jorge. Ish looks for his last home in God's faith, however, his most terrible nightmare comes into reality. Though all the other community members manage to recover, Joey succumbs to the virus and is killed. This shatters Ish completely, and he decides to abandon his mission to set up a survivor's community.

Ish tries to burn down the public library and erases the graffiti on the Town Hall, which welcomes survivors into their community. However, upon Emma's pleadings, she manages to talk him down. Ish eventually learns to make peace with his grief and returns to the journey of teaching the new generation, to survive in the new world.

Earth Abides episode 6 takes another small time shift to Year 21, where Ish stumbles upon a journal while packing Joey's belongings. In the notebook entire, Ish finds diagrams for ideas for getting inventions working. Ish finds that one of the inventions included directions to make a makeshift radio, looking for transmissions from other survivors.

All the other survivors join in, to work through and make Joey's idea come true. They eventually begin to look through different transmissions and frequencies, searching for any kind of communication from other survivors. Earth Abides episode 6 takes a short break from its grave theme when the members join together for a baseball game. Upon their discussion, they revealed that the numbers were radio frequencies. From the frequency 17225, they get a reply from California from the other side. They find that there are 77 survivors in Point Lobos, which once used to be a State Natural Reserve. The survivors reveal that they have settled by the ocean, and mainly source their food from the fish.

The community eventually decided to reach out to them, hoping to collaborate. Earth Abides episode 6 finally makes a large time shift to Year 50, showing Ish to be an old man. He is seen with Heather's oldest son Jack, He eventually passes on his hammer which Jorge gifted to him, to Jack. This symbolizes that Ish had passed on his legacy and duty to lead the community, into the future, in the new world.

Earth Abides in its finale sees that numerous houses in the area covering San Lup have been set up. This indicates that more survivors have joined the community over the years, and succeeded in setting up a town, for themselves. This is similar to the ending of George R. Stewart's 1949 book, where Ish passes down the hammer to his great-grandson Jack, before his death.

Though the series is set in a contemporary scenario, Earth Abides succeeds in doing justice to the original storyline. It keeps its primary theme alive, which chronicles a future, where humans have learned to live in harmony with nature.
