En el barro is a spin-off of the hit Argentinian crime drama El Marginal. The show spanned five seasons from 2016 to 2022. In Argentina, the first three seasons were broadcast by Television Publica before Netflix acquired the streaming and international distribution rights for the series in 2022.
The seasons follow different story arcs, which take place in the same universe and also feature some recurring characters. Season 1 follows the story of former cop Miguel Palacios, who is imprisoned under a fake name and has to infiltrate a prison gang that had kidnapped a judge's daughter.
Season 2 serves as a prequel to the events of season 1. It follows the story of the Borges gangsters Juan Pablo "Diosito" Borges and Mario Borges, who are imprisoned in the San Onofre jail, where they plan on overthrowing the current leader, "El Capo" Quiroga by colluding with the "Sub 21" gang.
Season 3 features the Borges gang once again, as they are tasked with watching over Cristian Pardo, a businessman's son who killed his friend in a drunk driving accident.
