The crime detailed in Evil Lives Here is about Donald, who found himself trapped in a toxic and volatile relationship. His daughter, Desiree, observed Joy's hot-tempered and manipulative behavior, which gradually worsened.

Donald was shot and killed in the parking lot of Slammers Bar in Mount Orab, Ohio, on February 10, 1997. The awful tragedy happened early in the morning when Brown County Sheriff's Office Deputy Buddy Moore saw a strange truck leaving the area around the bar.

Someone in the parking lot called for help and mentioned that there had been a shooting. Upon arrival, authorities found Joy Major Hoop leaning over Donald's lifeless body.

The investigation and evidence

It didn't take long for the experts to point out that there had been foul play. Soon after Donald's body was found, police tracked the strange truck to a nearby trailer park. Kathy Kerr, a resident of the area, led police to the bathroom, where they found an individual named Carl G. Lindsey, who was trying to wash off blood.

The police also found Lindsey's clothes blood-soaked, a pocket knife, bullets, and a. 22-caliber automatic pistol. Police also found Donald's wallet holding almost $1,000 cash.

Immediately, the police arrested Lindsey and took Joy in to question her. Joy admitted that she, Lindsey, Kerr, and another accomplice, Kenneth Swinford, were talking about killing Donald earlier that day.

Joy tried to say that the conversation was just a joke, but the investigators weren't convinced because she had a reputation for being rude and controlling.

Unraveling the motive

Further investigation clarified the poison in Donald and Joy's marriage. Family members and witnesses called Joy manipulative and violent, and raised questions about her intentions.

Joy reportedly had expressed several times that she wanted to see Donald dead. This revelation confirmed her part in planning the murder, which resulted in her conviction for complicity in Donald's brutal murder and conspiracy.

Their relationship turned into the main focus of the case since it highlighted how Joy persuaded others to carry out her plan. For his involvement in Donald's death, Lindsey was found guilty and was sentenced to death.

Joy Major Hoop was found guilty and given a life sentence with an option of parole after 25 years. She is currently incarcerated at the Ohio's Dayton Correctional Institution.
