What’s the fate of the assessors at the end of Evil season 4?
While the news of the main trio’s separation had been a painful event, it was somewhat predicted when the Vatican’s agents, and the Archdiocese seemed suspicious of their activities. The assessors were merely tools operating on behalf of the entity to basically undertake odd jobs, but still, the trio managed to find The 60 demonic house’s truth and their scheme.
After learning that each of The 60 was targeting the 60 human brain functions including fear response, sleep regulation, and reasoning, Father Giovanni underestimated David’s prowess and was dealt a huge unanticipated blow from The 60, which put him in a tight spot. That made David more important to Giovanni and his presence in Rome was much needed.
David accepted Giovanni’s proposal albeit the condition was to let the Assessors resume their work, but Kristen and Ben weren't on board to return. Kristen didn’t want to leave her new job and move to Rome as well as the uncertainty of the role, and the Church’s new pay was one-fifth of Ben's current salary.
Ben, seemingly, never wanted a desk job but was content with the money he was making. Meanwhile, Kristen changed her mind and moved to Rome with all her children alongside David. The reason behind what caused Kristen’s realization, influenced by her doppelganger’s perception, is that taking risks to live life to the fullest.
As for David leaving the priesthood, it simply didn’t happen in the finale nor did he end up with Kristen or anyone else. The duo continued as assessors, embarking on new quests in Rome.

What was the VR’s countdown all about in Evil season 4?
The virtual reality headsets with a game called Mother Midnight gave the Bouchard girls a nightmare that gave them chills.
Watching Leland kill their mother in the virtual reality world, followed by the sudden activation of a countdown timer, convinced Lila and Lynn that the device predicted a future event that they had to prevent at any given cost.
Kristen, David and Ben also experienced the game and the technology used was indeed futuristic. After analyzing, Ben discovered that the VR was using an integrated chip capable of influencing the cerebral cortex, a device similar to Toupin’s cerebral path. The trio also found out that the company behind the VR was DF and it was working with The 60.
During the online conference of The 60, which they opted for instead of the usual physical gathering, Leland revealed that they would be using new technology to plant Evil in the human brain. Also, the countdown was nothing but an advertisement that marked the end of the trial period, urging the users to subscribe to its plans.

Evil season 4 ending sees Leland ending up in a monastery but not willingly
During the very call with all members of The 60 demonic families, Leland and Stick were questioned by Gray about the fates of Kristen and the baptized child. Leland proclaimed to kill them the very day at midnight, which was an impromptu plan.
Sneaking through the massive hole in the basement of Kristen’s home, Leland made it inside the building. Undoubtedly, he failed once again in his plans when Kristen got to him before he did, knocking Leland unconscious using a rope.
Surprisingly, David and Ben were there and together they carried his body to the silent retreat where Sister Andrea was being transferred. At the end of the series, Leland was locked in a cabinet, where it's unlikely he would ever make it out.
