In the previous episode, Fear of the Other, Father David Acosta tried his best to convince the council of the Archdiocese of a deal that could stabilize the financial crisis. However, St. Joseph was already ordered to be deconsecrated, including a few other Churches, leaving David helpless in his efforts.

David had always taken great pride in serving the almighty and helping the miserable, even if that meant taking certain measures that could call his priesthood questionable. After his telekinetic abilities came to light, he was tossed from one mission to another by Father Dominic, who didn’t seem to care about the emotional impact the events would have on him.

As seen in Evil season 4 episode 13, David almost made up his mind to leave his affiliations with the Vatican for good. However, Father Giovanni caught him by surprise after revealing to David that he was consigned to him and that he would be working under Vatican security.

David would be leaving for Rome for his new designation, ultimately separating him from Ben and especially Kristen by a great distance. Given that Kristen harbored feelings for David, her reaction to this news was obvious, as she didn’t want him to leave.

On the other hand, Sister Andrea had been forcefully retired by the Archdiocese, and she knew the reason behind it. Given her extraordinary capabilities, her presence threatened the hierarchy, stirring nothing but jealousy among those in power. Sister Andrea would move to a silent retreat upstate.

Before she left, Sister Andrea got some time to kill by finding the missing relic of St. Joseph’s thighbone, and together with the already retired Father Ignatius, she encountered the demon. Fortunately, she found the relic and yet again proved her prowess.

One of the most shocking revelations made in Evil season 4 was Leland being affiliated with the entity and being trained to develop his remote viewing capabilities. However, unlike David, Leland went through some real horrors that left a deep scar, surprisingly turning him into a sadist.

Leland revealed to David that he left the entity simply because he believed in free will. Leland found pleasure in doing evil things, and thus he joined The 60. However, there was another underlying truth, and that was he grew hateful of the Church and the entity using him as a puppet to make him do things that he didn’t really want to.

As Leland had the powers of remote viewing, he didn’t have a chance to defy anyone, but in the end, he left the entity. During his second meeting with David, Leland subtly instilled doubt in him about the entity being equally corrupt as The 60. After Leland asked David about his handler’s disappearance out of the blue, David too was surprised and began to ponder about it.

Although David accepted Father Giovanni's offer to be a part of Vatican security, it is also possible that he could leave the priesthood for Kristen, which was a deal proposed by Leland.

While it didn’t seem like Professor Toppin was involved with some occult practices, unbeknownst to him, his secretary was a literal demon. Although, like the rest of the demons, Neil tried his best to fit in, tricking Sister Andrea was something deemed impossible. Andrea tried to kill the demon, but due to a sudden emergency, he was saved.

The Vatican invited Toppin to consult on quantum analysis at the Pontificia Accademia delle Scienze. However, due to rumors surrounding him, his case needed to be assessed. Toppin was hospitalized, but fortunately, he survived. Ben later confronted Toppin after finding out that the cerebral path was killing him.

However, the latter was hesitant, as he claimed that the device gave him an advantage to focus on his work, and later it would come in handy to upload it into the cloud, where he could live forever. This was something that stunned Ben, who had always been a firm believer in science.
