All nine episodes of Exploding Kittens were released on Netflix on July 12, 2024. The title is loosely based on the bestselling card game of the same name by Matthew Inman and Elan Lee, which is also available as a mobile game. The characters in this animated series are voiced by Tom Ellis, Sasheer Zamata, Ally Maki, Mark Proksch, and others.
The series focuses on God, who is sent down to Earth in the form of a talking cat with limited powers. His mission is to get back in touch with his creation, humanity. However, things heat up when he finds out that his archenemy is near him, and a battle between good and evil ensues.
The official synopsis of the show reads:
“It's the ultimate fight between good and evil when God and his nemesis, the spawn of Satan, are sent to Earth to live with humans — as talking cats.”
Exploding Kittens' plot focuses on Godcat in the Higgins family's home
In the series, viewers see that life on Earth has generally become a sad affair. Heaven in this title is shown to be run like an office, and the members of the board are not too pleased with what God has been doing. He was seen being on the verge of burning down half of Heaven while making a pizza, and destroying unicorns. As a result, they decide that God should go down to live amongst his creation as rehabilitation.
God lands on Earth and finds himself trapped in the body of a talking cat. Two members of Heaven, who are accompanying him, inform him that he does have some powers but they are limited. As Exploding Kittens progresses, Godcat ends up in the Higgins family's home.
The Higgins family is a dysfunctional family with two siblings, the failing social media content creator Travis (Kenny Yates) and his nerdy sister Greta (Ally Maki). Their parents live different lives and they do not get along well. Godcat must restore joy in this family and only after accomplishing this mission can he return to Heaven.
However, Exploding Kittens takes a turn as it pits Godcat against Devilcat, who happens to be his neighbor. The series has several humorous moments as even though the two are enemies, they have many things in common as they are both talking cats trapped amongst humans.
Exploding Kittens: The card game, cast and crew, and more
The series is loosely based on the bestselling card game of the same name. Cartoonist Matthew Inman and former Xbox designer Elan Lee launched the title in 2015. The card game proved to be extremely popular after its release and it has sold more than 35 million copies as per Netflix's Tudum.
It features 56 cards and players keep pulling cards until one of them draws an 'Exploding Kitten.' This results in a loss, unless the player can use cat toys or catnip to cancel out the draw.
The Netflix series sees Lucifer star Tom Ellis voicing Godcat and Sasheer Zamata bringing Devilcat/Beelzebub to life. The other cast members include Suzy Nakamura as Abbie, Mark Proksch as Marv, and Ally Maki as Greta, among others.
Exploding Kittens is currently streaming on Netflix.
