Taking a deeper dive into Eric Hill and Rosa Hill's relationship in episode 3 of Worst Ex Ever
As shown in episode three of Worst Ex Ever, Eric Hill and Rosa Hill met in the early 2000s. Their love story started with a hike, after which Eric asked her out on dates. Rosa already had a daughter from her previous marriage named Mei.
Mei was an engineer with a logical and analytical mind as per the show. Eric on the other hand was a very bright guy too with a mind like an encyclopedia, as Ryan Carson, Eric's buddy reveals on the show.
Eric decided to get married to Rosa on February 14, 2004. Eric told his family about the same on Valentine’s Day. Mei too was happy about their engagement. As shown in Worst Ex Ever, Eric's grandmom Sally was more excited than Eric and any other family members about his engagement. A year later, Rosa and Eric took their wedding vows on April 2, 2005, and went on their honeymoon to Hawaii.
The falling apart
As shown in episode three of Worst Ex Ever, a week into the honeymoon, the couple started fighting. Rosa was stressed previously because of the marriage preparations and even after the marriage, she remained agitated. After their first fight during the honeymoon, things didn’t go well for Eric as he was confused as to why his wife had been behaving strangely.
He was the only bread earner in the family as per the show, and after the marriage and honeymoon, he went into debt. As per Eric's father, Eric became the 'cash cow' and Rosa would fight with him too often because of their financial situation.
She even became controlling and wanted Eric to talk less to his friends and family. Eric slowly started to isolate himself from the rest of the world because of marital pressure. A few months after the marriage, Rosa Hill got pregnant, and on July 21, 2006, their daughter was born.
At this time, Eric was doing two jobs to support the family. He worked at Almeda County Social Services from 8:30 am to 5 pm and then worked later at the pharmacy from 11:30 pm to 8 am. Eventually, Eric got less sleep.
After his daughter was born, Rosa started to fight more with Eric and even threatened to divorce him. She would go to her parents' house with their daughter and wouldn’t come back home on many days, which made Eric upset, as he felt like he was living alone, as shown in episode three of Worst Ex Ever.
Soon, Eric started having mental health issues, following which the couple separated. In March 2007, Eric Hill was kicked out of his residence and Rosa had complete control of the bank accounts, house, and the kid. In June 2007, Eric got angry after he was not allowed to meet his daughter after which he sued Rosa for custody. The judge ruled to give 50% custody to both, however, that did not make Rosa happy.
A few months after the last custody hearing, Rosa accused Eric and pressed charges against him claiming that he se*ually abused his daughter. Eric eventually lost custody however and also feared that he might lose his job because of false accusations.
However, when it was later discovered that Eric hadn’t assaulted his daughter, and the allegations were all fake, Rosa lost full custody, as revealed in episode three of Worst Ex Ever, which turned out to be lethal for Eric in the long run. After their falling out, Mei would act as a mediator between the couple.
Rosa Hill and Mei Li killed Selma Hill
As shown in episode three of Worst Ex Ever, Rosa and Mei went inside Sally's (Selma Hill’s), Eric's grandmother's residence on January 7, 2009, and strangled and killed her. Later, they dumped her body in a bin outside the house, which was placed inside an exterior shade and locked from outside.
When Eric came inside the house to look for his granny, Rosa, and Mei tased him and attacked him too. The mother-daughter duo hit Eric with a baton and also kicked him continuously. When Eric was down, Rosa pointed a gun at him and told him to give the custody of the daughter back. If he refused, she promised to kill him.
At that point in time, Eric did not want to die as he revealed on the show. Therefore he agreed to give custody of his two-year-old back. The entire time they attacked Eric, his daughter remained locked in a dark washroom, crying for help.
Rosa and Mei wanted Eric to get arrested by blaming him for the death of his grandmom. They planned 'Operation Custody' to get the child back to Rosa. However, things didn’t work out well for the mother-daughter duo.
July 28, 2011, Rosa Hill and Mei Li were sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the murder of Sally Hill and the attempted murder of Eric Hill, based on the evidence found at the scene and at Rosa's home.
