Exploring Kevin Lewis and Amanda Canales’s relationship in Netflix's Worst Ex Ever

Episode four of Worst Ex Ever on Netflix which was released on August 28, 2024, started with a cry for help and a 911 call as Abigail found Alisha Canales shot dead. As the episode proceeded, a recap of Kevin and Amanda‘s relationship was played out. From being the definition of picture perfect to becoming a match made in purgatory, is what episode four documents.

Episode four of Worst Ex Ever on Netflix is titled Married to a Monster and the official synopsis for the same as per Netflix reads as follows -

Episode four of Worst Ex Ever starts with sweet beginnings for Amanda and Kevin

As shown in Worst Ex Ever episode 4, Kevin and Amanda met at Denny’s (an eatery) for the very first time. Amanda went to Denny’s with her friends and while she was sitting at the table, Kevin approached her directly and wanted to take her out, however, Amanda ignored him the first time.

Next time, when they bumped into each other, Kevin told her 'This was meant to be,' after which they would hang out more often. A few weeks after hanging out with each other, they started dating and liked each other's company.

A few months into the relationship, Kevin bonded well with Amanda’s brother Mannie Canales, and became Xbox buddies. Kevin was in the military and was also a trained boxer. He was 5’11 and 185 pounds. Seven months into dating, Kevin and Amanda moved together and finally got married in July 2009.

Kevin did not have the support of his family, therefore Amanda’s family came in for him and treated him as their son. In September 2011, Amanda got pregnant with their first child. A few months after giving birth to Eliana, she got pregnant again. In total, Amanda and Kevin had three children in the course of their marriage.

Amanda Canales and Kevin Lewis started falling out

As shown in Worst Ex Ever episode 4, when Amanda Canales was pregnant for the third time, Kevin called her a fat bi*ch and a crybaby. As per Amanda, Kevin had abandonment issues, therefore he would get angry very often. He reportedly didn’t like Amanda wearing revealing clothing or hanging out with guys and was emotionally abusive throughout their marriage.

However, Amanda tried to make things work. She learned her husband’s triggers and avoided conversations that would lead to a fight, as shown in Worst Ex Ever episode 4.

In February 2016, Amanda talked to Kevin about a divorce, which hurt him. Later that year, on November 6, 2016, at 5 a.m. Kevin Lewis was in a rage early morning. He entered Amanda’s room and wanted to look through her phone. However, when he tried to push her finger against the fingerprint-scanning button, it didn’t open. Kevin then pushed Amanda to the closet and punched her in the eye.

When he realized what he had done, he got a towel and cleaned the blood, after which he hugged Amanda and went to work. This scared Amanda to her core as she was assaulted for the first time. She took pictures of her bruises and documented them.

As shown in Worst Ex Ever episode 4, Amanda Canales informed her parents about the same and later moved out of the house. Soon, Kevin apologized and wanted her to be back. He would spam her phone when she didn’t respond. One day after the assault, Kevin called Amanda and threatened her to come home or else he would file child support, alimony, and full custody of the kids. However, if he doesn’t get the same, he will kill her.

A few days after that call, Amanda was attacked outside her home. As she came back from dance practice, she was getting out of the car. Someone with their face covered, hit Amanda Canales over her head many times and left her in the driver's seat, gravely injured. Her vision was blurry and she was close to passing out. Amanda’s face was split open, she couldn’t move her arm and had broken teeth and bruises on her leg and body.

However, when she went to the hospital and the officers came to ask her what had happened and who attacked her, she couldn’t confirm it was Kevin as Amanda’s vision was blurry and she had not seen the assassin's face.

After this attack on her, she filed complaints and got a protection order for herself and the kids, as she knew that it was Kevin who attacked her, however, she had no proof for the same. Amanda's family and Amanda herself started to live in fear, thinking Kevin could come for them any moment.

Kevin Lewis wanted to kill Amanda Canales

Kevin Lewis hired his cousin Jerradon Phelps and Jerradon’s girlfriend to kill Amanda. He paid Jerradon 2400$. On the night of September 20, 2017, as the killers went to Amanda’s residence to slay her, they didn’t know that she was away. As they went to the residence and rang the bell, Amanda’s sister Alisha Canales-McGuire opened the door. Jerradon shot her multiple times and then left the scene.

A year after the murder, Kevin was arrested for two counts of second-degree assault against Amanda. He was jailed with a three-year sentence.

Later, the officers discovered that Jerradon Phelps and Alexis Hale were involved in the murder of Alisha Canales-McGuire. Upon interrogation, they pleaded guilty. They also revealed that Kevin had paid them to assassinate Amanda.

In 2020, Jerradon was sentenced to 31.5 years in prison and Alexis was sentenced to 15 years in prison for her active involvement in the murder. Kevin too was sentenced to life in prison in November 2021, based on circumstantial evidence and testimonies, although he didn’t confess to killing Alisha Canales.
