A viral clip circulating on social media has led people to believe that Vice President Kamala Harris made a surprise video appearance at Comic-Con. The clip, which aired during The Simpsons' panel on Saturday, July 27, showcases Harris, the current frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination, dressed in a suit and reading lines from an iPad. Harris read:
"Our country should move forward, not backward; upward, not forward; and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom."
The Hollywood Reporter noted that when the clip played at Comic-Con, it elicited huge cheers from audience members who thought it was a recent recording of the Vice President.
However, Kamala Harris did not appear at the San Diego Comic-Con in person, nor did she shoot a video for the event. As per TMZ and The Hollywood Reporter, the clip is an old resurfaced recording of Harris quoting an episode of The Simpsons, filmed a few years ago.
Kamala Harris did not appear at the San Diego Comic-Con
The Simpsons panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday ended with a bang. Series creator Matt Groening introduced the final clip of the event, stating it was from a "super fan." The audience was stunned to know that the "super fan" was none other than Vice President Kamala Harris.
As mentioned earlier, the clip showed a laughing Kamala Harris quoting an episode of The Simpsons. However, the footage was not recent. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, it was recorded by a bunch of University of Chicago students who had to get elected officials to quote The Simpsons as part of a task.
The iconic line was taken from the first episode of the eighth season of the show, titled Treehouse of Horror VII. The episode aired way back on October 27, 1996, right before the 1996 presidential elections between former US President Bill Clinton and Republican Bob Dole, which Clinton eventually won.
In the episode, Homer Simpson is kidnapped by a couple of aliens named Kang and Kodos, who demand to be taken to the leader of Earth. With the presidential elections approaching, the aliens kidnap the original Bill Clinton and Bob Dole. Through the process of 'bio-duplication,' Kang and Kodos assume the forms of Clinton and Dole, return to earth, and contest the 1996 elections, which Kang a.k.a. Bob Dole wins.
Social media has been abuzz with The Simpsons references ever since Kamala Harris decided to run for president. Comparisons between current events have been made with season 11, episode 17, of the show, titled Bart to the Future, in which Lisa Simpson becomes the first female president of the country. This mirrors Harris's attempt to accomplish the very same feat in the 2024 presidential elections.
Moreover, footage from the episode, featuring Lisa speaking on a podium complaining about budget issues by Donald Trump, also went viral. Many have noted the similarity between the purple suit Lisa wears in the episode and a picture of Harris in a similar suit during her vice presidential inauguration.
In recent developments, after joining the presidential race, Kamala Harris has narrowed the gap between herself and Republican candidate Donald Trump. According to a Wall Street Journal poll released on Saturday, July 27, the former president leads the vice president by 49% to 47%, a difference of only 2%.
