House of the Dragon season 2 episode 4 ended on a sombre note as the first real battle of the dragons at Rook's Rest wreaked devastation upon both the Black and Green factions of the Targaryen dynasty. The episode ended with Aemond and Ser Criston Cole finding the crashed dragon Sunfyre and a severely burnt king Aegon.
Aegon became a target of Vhagar's fire after Aemond joined the battle against Rhaenys. Even though the scene is ambiguous and open to interpretation, it is clear that Aegon thought Aemond fired at him on purpose. After this, Aegon and his dragon Sunfyre collapsed into the woods.
Later, Ser Criston found Aegon lying beside his dragon, badly burnt and wounded. The preview for the next episode reveals that Aegon is not dead yet, but has sustained many burns and wounds.
What happened to Aegon on House of the Dragon season 2 episode 4?
During House of the Dragon season 2 episode 4, Aegon was outsmarted by Aemond's plan of attack during a Small Council meeting. Aemond even mocked his brother by speaking High Valyrian, a language the king had little command over. This caused Aegon to stew angrily about his position as king.
Later he speaks to his mother Alicent, and she tells him he hasn't been a king worthy of his position, and that his father ruled much better. She further chastises him by saying that he has learnt nothing from the wisdom of those around him.
The final straw is when Alicent goads her son by saying that he should do nothing and leave important matters to the Council.
This angers Aegon, and he makes the impulsive decision to take his dragon to the battlefield. He joins the ongoing conflict at Rook's Rest, unaware that Aemond previously made a plan of attack with Ser Criston and Vhagar.
Aegon rides into the fray to face Rhaenys and her dragon Meraxes on his own dragon Sunfyre. Aemond joins the fight when he sees his elder brother getting overpowered, but instead of helping, orders his dragon Vhagar to blow fire at Aegon and Rhaenys. Betrayed by his brother, Aegon and Sunfyre crash into the forest.
How does Aegon II Targaryen die in the books?
In the books by George R.R. Martin, Aegon II Targaryen outlives Rhaenyra and manages to retain his position as king. However, he grows weaker as the Green army diminishes in power. Aegon also ignores the advice from his family and Lord Corlys Velaryon when many defeated lords start allying against the crown.
When Lord Kermit Tully starts an attack march on King's Landing, Aegon refuses to abdicate the throne. After this announcement, he goes to drink some wine but is found dead later, with blood on his lips.
It is not known who poisoned Aegon, but the main suspects in the books are Lord Corlys Vealryon, Lord Larys Strong, and Ser Perkin the Flea.
After Aegon's death, the crown had no immediate male heirs to the throne. Hence, Rhaenyra and Daemon's son, Aegon III, ascends the Iron Throne and rules the kingdom.
After his predecessor's death, Aegon III is the one who marries Aegon II's daughter Jaehaera Targaryen. This act unites the two warring factions in an attempt to finally bring some peace to the realm.
