Is there going to be Elite season 9? Explained

Fans have been wondering about Elite season 9 after all eight episodes of season 8 of the popular series released on Netflix on 26 July, 2024. As per multiple reports, the series won't return for a ninth season.

The official synopsis of the series reads:

“When three working-class teens enroll in an exclusive private school in Spain, the clash between them and the wealthy students leads to murder.”

Across its eight-season long run, Elite took viewers through the various scandals, adventures and romances in and around Las Encinas. However, there will be no Elite season 9, as officially announced.

Why there will be no Elite season 9

Elite season 8 was greenlit for production in July, 2023. It was not known then if that would be the last season of the series.

However, on October 18, 2023, Deadline published a report carrying official confirmation that Elite season 9 won't be made, so season 8 would be the last of the series.

Deadline obtained the following statement from Carlos Montero, the creator of the series:

“We are shooting the eighth season, which will be the last season of Elite. We ended on a high note.”

Explaining the decision, Montero added:

“Jaime (Vaca, co-showrunner for season 7), Netflix and I thought it was time to end it.”

Elite has entertained fans since season 1 with a plotline that often mixed social issues with a fast-paced story. Among other things, it depicts the difference class position can make in life.

Like the other seasons, season 8 of Elite also includes a murder mystery. However, by the end of the finale, Las Encinas is shut down, which effectively closes all possibilities of Elite season 9.

What happens in Elite season 8?

The official synopsis of season 8 reads:

“Omar and Nadia reunite just as graduation nears for students at Las Encinas and one last mystery pushes friendships — and enemies — to the brink.”

After teasing the eventual murder of Raúl in the season 7 finale, much of season 8 is about the mystery surrounding the murder of Joel and the complications this results in the relationships among the various students.

Joel is indecisive when it comes to choosing his romantic partner. He cannot decide between Ivan and Hector, both of whom are shattered by his sudden murder. Suspicion falls on a variety of students, but a twist in the end reveals that Luis, a corrupt police officer, killed Joel.

This season also deals quite a lot with the personal journey of Omar, but the murder of Joel dominates the plotline of the season. After its mysteries are revealed, Las Encinas is shut down for good after years of being embroiled in controversies.

The finale of the season shows the rich students of the school having to attend public schools to finish their education. This definitive closure rules out any hope for Elite season 9.
