A month ago, Disney executive Meredith Roberts teased the potential return of Gravity Falls season 3, which sent social media buzzing with speculation. The hype around the release has been reignited once more when fans discovered a mysterious countdown site potentially related to the series. This had fans thinking that the release announcement for Gravity Falls season 3 could be right around the corner.
However, the countdown page has turned out to be a hoax since no news for a third season of Gravity Falls has been confirmed yet.
Gravity Falls is a Disney Channel original series that ran from June 2012 to February 2016 before being canceled following its second season. In its short run, the animated comedy became a fan favorite and has lived on through Disney Channel shorts that have aired since the cancellation. With the discovery of the countdown site following Roberts' statement, fans are wondering whether Gravity Falls will return with a third season.
Countdown site for Gravity Falls Season 3 turns out to be a hoax
A mysterious countdown website has emerged named ThisIsNotAWebsite.com, which got fans wondering whether Gravity Falls season 3 is really coming. The site seems to be related to the series as the name has appeared in the recently released Book of Bill novel, written by Gravity Falls series creator Alex Hirsch.
It is based on the world of Gravity Falls and tracks Bill Cipher's mysterious origins. This made fans excited about a potential release date or, at least, any news of renewal. The web address has appeared at the bottom of page 16 in The Book of Bill next to a copyright notice. On opening the address, viewers found a login screen and a triangle icon above it.
The site is password protected and on entering the password, a popup countdown appears with a pictogram of Bill Cipher. However, after the countdown ended, the page was renamed to "TIME IS DEAD AND MEANING HAS NO MEANING" and the countdown changed to NOW. But on further refreshing, an "under construction" screen featuring Soos appears.
The countdown has also been changed into a count-up on July 30, 2024, and a speech bubble appears that reads: "Oops, the Mystery Shack is currently experiencing some delays dude! Please bear with us as we figure out which wire goes where!"
However, there has been no major announcement or update on the site or any word from the showrunners or Disney regarding a potential third season. This made fans frustrated, questioning the point of the whole digital wild goose chase, and the website has turned out to be a hoax.
What is the password to the fake countdown page?
The website, ThisIsNotAWebsite.com, is password protected, with a series of clues to help fans uncover the code that would lead them to the content.
The password is revealed in a passage from the One True Intelligence Test. When reading upside down, question 7 in the book reveals a message in stretched text reading "Need a password? Fine, I'll talk." On tilting the book to the right a second message is revealed: "It's the name of the eyeball doc." Following decoding efforts, it was discovered that the password was the name of the optometrist from F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, "T.J. Eckleberg."
Will there be Gravity Falls season 3?
Following a teaser from an unknown website, which turned out to be a hoax, many are still hopeful that Gravity Falls season 3 will be announced soon. Some fans are even hoping for an announcement at the D23 Disney-centric fan convention that will take place at the Anaheim Convention Center this August.
While creator Alex Hirsch's statement on Tumblr did finalize the end of Gravity Falls, it goes without saying that hit series are often revived following fan demands. His statement read,
"The first thing to know is that the show isn’t being canceled- it’s being finished. This is 100% my choice, and its something I decided on a very long time ago. I always designed 'Gravity Falls' to be a finite series about one epic summer- a series with a beginning, middle, and end. There are so many shows that go on endlessly until they lose their original spark, or mysteries that are canceled before they ever get a chance to pay off."
Fans had made peace with the fact that Gravity Falls was done for good. But in July 2024, Disney executive Meredith Roberts sparked the fires of speculation with her statement to The Direct:
"You know, we're in conversations with Alex. He's about to publish a book with Disney on his project. And we also do some shorts. So never say never."
This statement from Roberts and the release of Hirsch's book indicates that Disney might be hiding a potential secret related to Gravity Falls season 3.
There is a chance that the rumors regarding Gravity Falls season 3 will be addressed at D23. So watch this space for more updates.
