Claims of a new season of My Name is Earl being released spread like wildfire on social media. A poster going viral on Facebook claimed that a new season of the Jason Lee starrer was on the way.
The poster, shared on Facebook by an account named YODA BBY ABY, showcased the smiling face of Jason Lee's character Earl Hickey on an orange background with the title card of My Name is Earl slapped on his forehead. As per the poster, the show's latest season is expected to drop on Hulu in September 2024. The caption to the post read, "MY NAME IS EARL RETURNS!!!". It continued:
"Earl Hickey (Jason Lee) is back on Hulu in My Name is Earl! Join Earl, Randy, Joy, and Catalina as they embark on ten new episodes filled with hilarious and heartfelt adventures, righting past wrongs and tackling a mysterious second list. Get ready for laugh-out-loud moments, unexpected twists, and heartwarming resolutions when the series returns this September!"
As per the poster shared on Friday, July 12, this will be the fifth season of the iconic show, which ended in 2009 and was expected to feature the return of almost all regular cast members, including Ethan Suplee, Jaime Pressly, Nadine Velazquez, and Jason Lee.
At the time of writing this article, the Facebook post has amassed around 6,000 likes, 3,000 comments, and over 10,000 people shared it with others. Even though the poster appears legitimate to many, it is fake. There is no confirmation of a new season of My Name is Earl from Hulu, NBC (where the show originally aired), and showrunner Greg Garcia.
My Name is Earl is not returning for a fifth season
While My Name is Earl is a critically acclaimed beloved sitcom and somewhat of a cult classic among modern-day viewers, the recent claim about a new season being in the works is not true. The poster shared by the Facebook account YODA BBY ABY seems to be heavily edited. Moreover, the introduction section of the account labels it as a satire page. It read:
"I'm just here to eat frogs, lift rocks and be satirical. The page is 100% satire and fake news. ❤️"
Some of the other posters the account shared, which are just satirical fake news, include a poster for a second part of Ratatouille, releasing in March 2025, and an Elden Ring movie starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson coming out on November 2024 that has never been heard of before.
My Name is Earl ended on an unfinished note after four seasons in 2009 after negotiations for a fifth season with NBC broke down. 20th Century Fox Television approached many networks, including Fox and TBS, to pick up the show, but it didn't happen.
Ethan Suplee, who played Randy Hickey on the show, elaborated on the show's cancellation in a 2023 appearance on the Slick & Thick podcast.
"We were a hit. And the network called the studio and said, 'We want to license the show for another year,' and the studio said, 'Well, we want more money. We want to renegotiate our deal with you.' And the network basically did not respond for two weeks. And then the studio called back and said, 'We'll take your deal,' and the network said, 'Too late,'" the actor explained.
In another 2023 interview with Screen Rant, Suplee mentioned that "everybody involved" wanted to do another season of the show. He exclaimed that it would be "awesome" but at the same time revealed that showrunner Greg Garcia's pitches weren't received well by any studio. Despite discussing the show's last episode with Garcia, Suplee did not have a lot of hope that it would happen.
My Name is Earl revolves around Jason Lee's character, Earl Hickey, a petty criminal who wins the lottery and decides to turn his life around and right all his wrongdoings.
