After five successful seasons of Prison Break, fans are left wondering if the Primetime Emmy-nominated series would return tp the small screen for a sixth season.
The show first premiered in 2005 on Fox Network and finished its fourth season in 2008. It was originally canceled, but the popularity brought the show back for Season 5 as a limited series almost a decade later, in 2017, and the franchise has been left dormant since.
In the OG storyline, Wentworth Miller's Michael Scofield, who is a structural engineer, gets himself into prison on purpose. He's in for the most elaborate plan in his life — help his older brother Linc (played by Dominic Purcell), who is in Death Row, escape from the prison he helped design.
Since Season 5 ended, rumors have been going on for years that a sixth season is in the works. However, it never panned out and one of its stars, Wentworth Miller, has already washed his hands off future projects.
That said, key people have announced that Prison Break Season 6 is in development, but there has never been an official confirmation of the series.
Prison Break 6 is currently in development
Currently, there's no official confirmation about a Season 6 happening in the near future, but show producer, Marty Adelstein, who also produced Snowpiercer, has shared an exciting update for fans.
When he was asked about the status of the new Prison Break installment, Adelstein told Deadline in a July 19, 2024, interview:
"It's really going well. The first script was really, really well done. They've given notes, and it looks like it's on its way."
Adelstein was referring to the new installment of the show, which will be written by Elgin James, the screenwriter for The Outlaws and Mayans M.C. That said, he remained mum about any story details or the production timeline.
Adelstein's latest update comes after a confirmation that Hulu is developing a reboot of the fan-favorite series in November 2023. Previously in 2019, Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier said that at the time, there was "no plan to revive Prison Break."
Will Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell be in the Prison Break reboot?
While there's a chance that the show will be back on the small screen, original series star Wentworth Miller has said that he wouldn't do any more projects for the franchise. He told Radio Times on November 9, 2020, that he was "officially" done with the series:
"I just don't want to play straight characters. Their stories have been told (and told) ... So, no more Michael. If you were a fan of the show, hoping for additional season, I understand this is disappointing. I'm sorry."
Three years after the feature was published, Miller's co-star and fictional older brother in the series, Dominic Purcell, shared an Instagram post (dated November 5, 2023) saying that "a new iteration" of the series is in the works, but, like Miller, he won't be in it.
Besides thanking fans for the "extraordinary gift" and "success" the show has brought, he noted:
"In closing a new iteration of "Prison Break" without myself nor Wentworth is in the early stages of production. I wish them well. That chapter is closed."
