With the end of House of the Dragon season 2, there were plenty of questions left unanswered, some even concerning the very intriguing Daemon Targaryen (played by Matt Smith), who has consistently been one of the most fascinating characters in the show. Due to his arc this season, Daemon has stayed out of action for the most part, but his Harrnehaal whims have given rise to a whole different fan theory.
Partly because of the tree, partly because of the haunting dreams, and partly because of the vision that Daemon gets in the final episode of House of the Dragons, fans have started speculating that the Targaryen Prince may be the Night King we saw in Game of Thrones.
However, despite how interesting it sounds, Daemon is not the Night King. The simple explanation for this lies in Game of Thrones, where the origin of the infamous villain was discussed in detail. Moreover, House of the Dragon takes place only 150 years before the events of Game of Thrones while the saga of the Night King goes way further back.
The timeline of House of the Dragon does not allow the Night King fan theory to stand
There could be a lot of ways to look at and interpret things, much like how fans have linked Daemon's visit to Harrenhaal, as well as his dreams and visions, to eventually becoming the Night King, who is finally seen in Game of Thrones.
The problem with this theory is its timing. If House of the Dragon took place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, there could be a possibility that the Targaryen Prince would eventually become the Night King. But this is impossible because the Night King and his legend existed from far before Aegon's conquest of Westeros.
Aegon came to Westeros in 2 BC while the story of creating the Night King goes back to 11,200 BC, which is enough to confirm that a Targaryen is not the Night King.
Game of Thrones has already revealed the origin of the Night King
While some fans are engrossed in the theory involving Daemon Targaryen, it is important to note that Game of Thrones had already depicted the origin of the Night King in Season 6 Episode 5, where Bran Stark witnessed it. The Night King is a mortal man, who was stabbed with a dragonglass dagger, which changed him into the Night King.
So, with the origin of the primary villain in mind, it is of course not practical to imagine that Daemon is the Night King.
Daemon Targaryen is still a character of key importance in the story
Though some fans may be disappointed that Daemon's vision in House of the Dragon season 2 finale did not take him any closer to being the Night King, this crucial moment in the story established that the Prince's role is far bigger than even he had imagined earlier.
As he gets a glimpse of the future, which also includes a cameo from Danaerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), the Prince's perspective towards the whole war changes and he eventually gets back to Rhaenyra's side. The vision that he saw confirmed, both to him and to the fans, that his role was far bigger in the whole prophecy than what most had imagined.
His character will be of crucial importance in House of the Dragon season 3 as well, which can perhaps give a better look into the meaning of this dream.
House of the Dragon season 2 is now streaming on Max.
