Five chilling details about Jill Halliburton Su's murder

1) Su was stabbed multiple times

As reported by CBS, Jill Halliburton Su was found by her son Justin in the bathtub, bloodied, tied up, and dead. There were two knives found at the crime scene. The evidence also suggested how Su must have retaliated and fought before she was killed. An alarm box was recovered from the bathtub and a belt was found at the scene to aid the investigation.

Jill Halliburton Su was stabbed twenty-five times. This makes it clear how brutal and gruesome the murder was. After seeing the multiple stab wounds, detectives speculated that she was probably killed by someone who was driven by hate.

If the killer was hired, he could have slit her throat or shot her however he didn’t choose to give Su an easy death.

2) The motive of the murder remains unclear

Although the murder was staged like a burglary with clear break-in attempts with a messed up room and jewelry boxes, nothing valuable was missing, as reported by CBS.

Two knives were found at the scene, out of which one had the DNA of Dayonte Resiles, the man arrested for the murder of Su. His DNA was also present on the broken glass door of the Su's residence. A belt recovered from the crime scene which could have been used to restrain Su also had Dayonte's genetic footprint on it.

It was speculated by authorities that the burglary was interrupted by Jill leading Dayonte to kill her. This still leaves room for more speculation as to why he would kill someone and then leave the murder weapon with his DNA at the crime scene.

Dayonte had a history of burglaries and breaking and entering, but his previous records never showed any signs of violence. This was also corroborated by his family. If he did kill Su then his motive remains a mystery, to which Dayonte too doesn't have answers to date. His DNA, genetic footprints, and cellphone data all went against him in court.

3) Justin’s 911 call was dicey

Justin who was the first to come and check up on Jill Halliburton Su, found her dead in the bathtub. According to him, he tried to revive her by giving her CPR before he called 911 and initially said that his mother had killed herself, calling her death a suicide.

But later he figured out that it was a murder as she couldn't have tied up her hands and stabbed herself multiple times. Justin’s phone call was suspicious and it hinted at him trying to hide something.

Justin had also lied about his whereabouts upon initial interrogation, hours after the death of his mother. When the officers asked him about where he was during the murder, he admitted that he was in school and later changed his statement by saying he was sleeping in his car and that he had skipped school.

Additionally, Justin informed the investigators that after entering the house, he proceeded to his room to drop off his car keys before checking on his mother. This raised suspicions because his father had sent him to check on her first.

As reported by the New York Post, Justin also had a knack for collecting knives, which initially made him a prime suspect in this killing. The police also sent his blood-stained clothes to the forensics.

4) Jill's husband called his son instead of the police

When Su’s husband Dr. Nan-Yao Su spotted an intruder in a mask trying to enter their home, he initially called his son to ask him if he was pulling a prank. When he confirmed it wasn’t him, Mr. Su asked him to check up on Jill Halliburton Su, as seen in the officially released interrogation footage.

Why did he not call the police instead and alert them about the same remains a mystery in this case.

5) Dayonte did not plead guilty

Although Dayonte was convicted by the jury in May 2022 for the murder of Jill Halliburton Su, he never confessed to the same as reported by CBS.

There were two knives found from the crime scene and the one in the bathroom did not have Resiles's DNA on it. The American Society of Crime Lab Detectors also found the County’s crime lab faulty.

As reported by NBC, after being charged with first-degree murder by the jury, Dayonte in his courthouse statement said -

"They can hook me up to a polygraph test at any given time, ask me any question they wish, and my answer will remain the same. I did not kill Mrs. Su and that's all I have to say. To my family, I love y'all, I don't want y'all, don't cry for me, no matter what I gotta go through, I'll get through it."
