Five details about Craig Rideout's murder explored
1) Craig Rideout went missing on July 19, 2016
Craig Rideout's sister, Robbyn Drew, had found Craig to be unresponsive over his phone throughout the day when she inquired at his workplace to find that he was on a day off on July 19, 2016. She reportedly went by his Penfield house to witness his ex-wife, Laura, wiping a kitchen counter through the apartment window, per The Rochester First.
Robbyn suspected foul play when she saw Laura and informed the authorities accordingly. However, she had to wait for a warrant for the police to search the house.
2) His body was found 50 miles away from his Penfield townhouse
In the early hours of July 20, 2016, a body was recovered from a wooded area in a field in Jerusalem, Yates County. The body was covered in tarpaulin and the face and hands were chemically burnt. It was positively identified to belong to Craig through dental records.
Moreover, the cellphone pings from Craig's phone, which began at around 3 am local time, traced the journey from Penfield to Yates County, per the Democrat and Chronicle.
3) Craig had been in the middle of a custody battle with his ex-wife, Laura
Craig and Laura Rideout had divorced one another before they were caught up in a custody battle over their youngest two children who stayed with Craig. Laura and her boyfriend, Paul Tucci, wanted to move to North Carolina and had signed a lease on an agreement beginning July 2016, per Spectrum News.
While Craig fought to keep custody of his youngest children, the relationship between the father and the elder sons, Colin and Alexander, kept deteriorating. The boys defended their mother and took her side in matters. They also shared the resentment that Laura allegedly shared towards Craig Rideout.
4) The evidence was fished out of a pond called Devil's Bathtub
The authorities in the matter started looking into surveillance footage from roads to map the car's journey to Yates County. Laura and her sons were spotted purchasing bottles of Liquid Lightning Drain Opener from a Walmart store. They reportedly bought a square-edged shovel from Walmart as well.
Colin and Alexander were caught on camera disposing of trash bags on July 21. The police fished out drowned evidence that included gloves, bloodied clothes, bottles of drain cleaner, tarpaulin, and a homemade garrote.
5) Paul Tucci, Laura Rideout, and her sons, Colin and Alexander, were tried for the murder
After the arrests of Paul Tucci, Laura Rideout, Colin Rideout, and Alexander Rideout, the four went to trial in 2017. While Paul Tucci was acquitted of all charges and walked a free man, Laura was found guilty and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison with an additional 15 years for burglary charges.
Colin was sentenced to 25 years to life as well while Alexander was sentenced to two years and eight months to eight years in prison. The latter was released on parole in 2021, per the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.
