Five key details about Ryan Poston's murder explored

1) Ryan Poston was found murdered in his apartment on October 12, 2012

Ryan Poston was found shot to death with six bullet wounds on his head and face on October 12, 2012. The 28-year-old attorney based out of Cincinnati, Ohio, met the 19-year-old psychology student, Shayna Hubers, on Facebook. Hubers lived 80 miles away from Ryan's place of residence, per CBS News.

Despite their relationship, Ryan was supposed to be on a date with Audrey Bolte, Miss Ohio USA 2012 the night he was found murdered.

2) Poston's girlfriend, Shayna Hubers, called 911 to report the murder

The 911 call from the Highland Heights condominium was from Shayna Hubers. Hubers had shown up at Ryan's front door unexpectedly when he informed her that he would be unavailable over the weekend.

Per court documents, Shayna waited for 15 minutes before she placed the 911 call and then mentioned:

"[I] shot him a couple more times just to kill him ... because he was twitching and [she] knew he was going to die anyway and he was making funny noises."

Hubers initially mentioned that she had shot Ryan in self-defense, per A&E TV.

3) Ryan Poston had intended to end the relationship with Hubers

Ryan Poston's stepfather, Peter Carter, mentioned in his testimony that Ryan had allegedly informed him of his decision to leave Shayna the day before he was murdered. Peter reportedly stated that Ryan was afraid of confronting her.

Ryan and Shayna dated on and off for over 18 months and had broken up multiple times during the period, per CBS News. Ryan met Shayna through his cousin, Carissa Carlisle, who reportedly shared:

"He said to me, this is getting to be restraining order level crazy. I'm not kidding. You need to talk to her. She sent me 75 texts in the last hour. She's shown up at my condo like three times and refuses to leave each time."

Carlisle testified saying that Shayna was obsessed with her brother and read out text messages to prove the same.

4) Shayna Hubers alleged that she killed Hubers in self-defense

Shayna Hubers initially claimed that she retaliated to an attack from Ryan Poston. She alleged that the murder was the result of months of domestic abuse. Hubers mentioned in the 911 call:

“I’m not a murderer. I just killed him in self-defense.”

However, her stance changed as she was summoned for interrogation the same night when she mentioned that the shots to Ryan's face possibly gave him the rhinoplasty that he always wished for. The authorities found no signs of injuries on Shayna's body barring slight discoloration, per court documents.

5) Shayna Hubers was sentenced to life in prison in August 2018

Shayna Hubers was arrested and charged with Ryan Poston's murder on December 20, 2012. She pleaded not guilty to the charges and faced her first trial on April 13, 2015, wherein she was sentenced to 40 years in prison, per WLWT.

Hubers and her defense appealed for a new trial and were granted one when one of the jurors was found to be a felon. In the second trial, which took place in August 2018, Hubers was sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole. She is currently incarcerated at the Kentucky Correctional Institute for Women, per the Kentucky Department of Corrections.
