Grotesquerie Season 1 returns with episode 5 airing on FX on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, where Detective Lois and Sister Megan become the ones being hunted. The new episode teased more intrigue in the detective and nun duo's quest to solve the mystery of the heinous crimes plaguing their small town.
Previously, in Grotesquerie Season 1, a clue from one of Mr. Grotesquerie's crimes sent the detective and Sister Megan to a town out of nowhere that was quickly engulfed in flames. The place is a literal and metaphorical definition of a gateway to hell.
With no real leads to find, Lois and Sister Megan plan to return home, but on the drive out of the town in the middle of a wildfire, they find a bloodied young woman who creepily tells them, "He's coming." In episode 5, Lois and Sister Megan are being hunted, and the young woman, Andrea, leads them to a motel for refuge as they wait out the wildfire to stop. However, tragedy happens at the place they sought for safety, and Sister Megan gets shot after she tries to do something heroic.

Grotesquerie Season 1 Episode 5 sees Sister Megan get shot and in critical condition
Ryan Murphy's Grotesquerie Season 1 Episode 5 started where the previous episode left off—the bloodied woman now known as Andrea leading the detective and the nun to somewhere safe. The "safe" location is a seedy motel in the middle of nowhere, where the water has turned into an odd and dangerous color because of copper.
Lois and Megan check in, but the detective gets bad vibes from the motel. Hell breaks loose as they try to check in on Andrea in a room she entered. When the duo opens the door, they find bloody footsteps leading them out another door.
Things go from bad to worse when Sister Megan, trying to clear the motel's vicinity with debris that may have caught fire, witnesses a car crash in the motel parking lot. She goes to help the people in the crash, but chaos surrounds her. Nick, the "all-around" guy working at the motel, is trying to drown the receptionist in the pool water while Lois is arguing on the phone in their room.
Suddenly, a car pulls up, and an unidentified man comes out, trying to kidnap Andrea. Nick and Lois start shooting at the man, but to no avail. Lois runs out of ammunition and goes to the room to get some. Meanwhile, Sister Megan goes towards the kidnapper to save Andrea. But before she does, Sister Megan realizes that she's been shot and falls to the ground.
While Lois and Sister Megan escape the burning town in an ambulance, the latter's life hangs in the balance. Father Charlie visits Sister Megan at the hospital and changes the carnation flowers at her bedside with wildflowers. He also asks Lois how Sister Megan is doing, to which Lois answers that the doctors didn't want to give any "false hope." This means no one is sure whether Sister Megan will recover.
A new murder plagues Detective Lois in Grotesquerie Season 1 Episode 5
After leaving the town that was in the middle of a wildfire after Sister Megan gets shot, Detective Lois is nowhere close to finding the true identity of the killer. However, she has a lead—a new name that makes her think that "Mr. Grotesquerie" could be a "Ms. Grotesquerie."
During Lois' conversation with Agent Hanover, the latter reveals possible names of people who could be out to get revenge against the detective. A woman named Gloria stands out. When Lois says that she was supposed to still be in prison, Hanover reveals that the woman got out for unknown reasons two months ago. The shocked detective then says that the timeline the woman was supposedly out of prison coincides with the timeline of when the murders started.
While Lois still ruminates over the fact that Gloria could be the serial killer, another murder happens. She faces yet another nightmarish scene when she arrives at the crime location, which is a maternity house attached to the St. Agnes Church. There, she sees dead bodies of once-pregnant women with their stomachs opened and with no babies in sight.
A police officer breaks down details about the dead bodies, noting that they are about 30, 32, and 40 weeks pregnant. Describing the murders, the officer says:
"He used C-section retractors. They died of shock and blood loss."
However, the dead bodies and bloody floor aren't the only fear-inducing part of the crime scene in Grotesquerie Season 1 Episode 5. There is also a message on the wall directly addressing the detective, which was written in blood, which reads:
"Follow me Detective Tryon and let the dead bury the dead. —Matthew 8:22"
Detective Lois, now more than ever, proves that the killer has a personal vendetta against her.
What did Detective Lois find at the orange grove?
While at the murder crime scene at the near-end of Grotesquerie Season 1 Episode 5, Seargeat Cranburn receives a phone call that another police found "something." Lois follows her latest lead in her hunt for the killer, bringing her to a home with kids and a missing mom. There, a cop tells the detective that the older sibling said to him that some guy stopped by their house last night, and her mom, who was pregnant, went away with the guy.
After promising the little girl to bring her mommy and the baby, Clancy, home, the detective searches for the woman. The search brings Lois across a crashed car with bloody towels and napkins all over the driver's and front passenger's seats. She follows the trail to an orange grove, where she finds a woman holding a baby wrapped in some bloody cloth.
Detective Lois sees the woman sobbing while holding the baby before she tells the detective, "He's going to kill me." The visibly rattled woman also repeatedly tells Lois:
"He's coming."
It was the exact phrase that Andrea repeatedly told Lois and Sister Megan when she entered their car after the duo almost ran her over the road at the end of Grotesquerie Season 1 Episode 4.
