Grotesquerie season 1 finale drops next Wednesday, October 30, 2024, on FX and a day after that on Hulu. But before its television premiere, FX gave a quick preview of what viewers could expect from the show's finale.
Since the stunning plot twist in episode 7, Detective Lois Tryon toys with the idea that her coma-induced dreams have much deeper meanings than regular dreams. With the help of therapists Dr. Witticomb and Dr. Smythe, they came up with the theory that some of Lois' murder dreams are predictions.
When one of the murder scenes in her nightmare came to life, like the horrific killing of the Burnsides, Lois almost believed the theory that she could predict the future via her dreams. But she also toys with another theory that can explain the Burnsides' murder copycat in her real life: someone snatched her files from the hospital and is trying to recreate the dreams.
Whatever the truth is, whether Lois is a prophet or is someone trying to make her violent dreams come true, one thing is for sure—a new killer is plaguing Lois' head and the town. In the Grotesquerie season 1 finale trailer FX published on YouTube on October 25, Lois is back on the hunt to find Grotesquerie.
Grotesquerie season 1 finale sees Lois hunt to find Grotesquerie
After the copycat of the Burnsides family murder in Grotesquerie season 1 episode 9, Lois appears to change her plans. She was supposed to retire to some small town in Florida to escape all the things happening to her. However, the Grotesquerie season 1 finale teaser sees her back in the middle of the murder scene.
The trailer starts with ominous music as Megan and Lois discuss the killings. The former tells the detective that she knows some of the people who were slaughtered. Whether she means the Burnsides or another copycat murder in the Grotesquerie season 1 finale remains to be seen.
The 40-second trailer takes a turn as Lois acknowledges that someone is trying to recreate her murder dreams, saying:
"A copycat killer copied my dreams...I've been here before."
It appears that Mr. Grotesquerie, in reality, won't stop with killing the Burnsides. As seen in the teaser, there are other recreations of murder scenes from Lois' dreams, including the "Last Supper" imagery, as seen in the Grotesquerie premiere, where a dozen of unhoused people were killed. There was also the goat head of the stitched-up body of prostitutes.
The preview also sees Lois confronting some key persons who could be related to the murders, including her husband, Marshall, and Dr. Charlie, whom Lois still doesn't trust despite him being her doctor.
Lois suspects Dr. Charlie Mayhew
In episode 8, Lois told Dr. Charlie Mayhew about the loose ends between them. She implied that the doctor has something to confess to her, and it appears that they will have their confrontation in Grotesquerie episode 10, where secrets are expected to spill out.
As seen in the finale preview, Lois confronts Dr. Charlie, saying:
"You are not who or what you say you are."
While Dr. Charlie defends himself, telling Lois that he saved her life, their interaction teases a secret that is about to be discovered in the next episode. It also points towards Charlie's other identity, a parallel to his dual identity in Lois' dream where he was Father Charlie Mayhew and Mr. Grotesquerie. Whether he remains as Grotesquerie in reality, like he was in the dream, is a big question that only the next episode can answer.
Is Marshall Mr. Grotesquerie?
Besides Charlie, the Grotesquerie season 1 finale trailer teases another suspect—Lois' husband, Marshall Tryon. The two don't have a good relationship, and they cheat on each other. When Lois was in a coma in episode 7, Marshall wanted her to die, and he even whispered it in her ear. In the finale teaser, Marshall is in police custody as he asks:
"Am I under arrest?"
He appears to be under arrest as his mugshot is taken before the preview teases the words, "Who is Grotesquerie?"
Travis Kelce's Ed Laclan returns in Grotesquerie season 1 finale
Travis Kelce's Ed Laclan was visibly missing from episodes 8 and 9, but the 40-second finale preview suggests his character is returning. He was last seen in episode 7, just as Lois was taken off life support and his affair with her was revealed.
At the time, "Fast Eddie" was sporting a Billy Ray Cyrus-inspired mullet, but oddly, in the finale teaser, he's back to the clean-cut Eddie persona who works as an orderly in the hospital in Lois' dream. Ed further teases secrets and mysteries in the Grotesquerie season 1 finale, as he creepily declares:
"You have no idea."
Catch the Grotesquerie season 1 finale live on FX next Wednesday, October 30, or stream it on Hulu one day after its FX premiere. Previous episodes of the crime thriller are also available to watch exclusively on Hulu.
