Mephisto has been teased in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for quite some time now, with speculation starting during the WandaVision series. However, the demon's existence was finally confirmed in the third episode of Agatha All Along, Through Many Miles / Of Tricks and Trials, on September 25, 2024.

One of the characters in this episode says that someone might be an "agent of Mephisto." This is the first time his name has been used in the MCU.

The official synopsis of the series mentions:

"In "Agatha All Along," the infamous Agatha Harkness finds herself down and out of power after a suspicious goth Teen helps break her free from a distorted spell. Her interest is piqued when he begs her to take him on the legendary Witches' Road, a magical gauntlet of trials that, if survived, rewards a witch with what they're missing."

It further reads:

"Together, Agatha and this mysterious Teen pull together a desperate coven, and set off down, down, down The Road. Set after the events of "WandaVision," Agatha Harkness recruits some unlikely allies on her quest to regain her former powers."

Mephisto, in Marvel Comics, is a powerful demon who often battles magic users like Doctor Strange, the Scarlet Witch and Ghost Rider. He's known to trick people and use their desires to get what he wants, usually by making deals that cost quite a lot.

Although he hasn't shown up on screen yet, his impact has been talked about ever since characters like the Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange made magic a big part of the MCU.

In the MCU, WandaVision and Doctor Strange's use of sorcery and magic in the Multiverse of Madness made it possible for Mephisto to show up. Fans thought that he would be shown to be a major bad guy on these shows, but that didn't happen.

The character of Mephisto has sparked speculation since the release of WandaVision in 2021.

During the series, it's speculated that the mysterious events in WestView were the work of this demon with its dark magic. Even though Agatha Harkness was eventually revealed to be the bad guy, he wasn't present in the show. But now with his name mentioned in the miniseries, rumors about his part are back in full swing.

Mephisto's possible link to WandaVision was mainly based on how closely he was linked to the Scarlet Witch in comics. The Darkhold and other powerful magical items made these ideas even stronger. However, Agatha All Along is where the demon's existence is proven, even though many things about his MCU incarnation are still unknown.

Significance of the character in Agatha All Along

The third episode of the Disney+ series is a big step forward in how the MCU looks at magic. When a member of Agatha's coven warns that someone might be working for Mephisto, it reveals that the demon has power over the characters in the series.

Even though he hasn't shown up in real life yet, this confirmation makes his presence in the MCU official. One important part of his comic book character is that he can control people who use magic.

The introduction of Mephisto's agents raises new questions. 'Who could be working for this powerful demon?' Characters like Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza) and Teen (Joe Locke) could be the ones. Rio has already been mean to Agatha, and her motivations may tie back to the demon.

The character of Teen, meanwhile, is very mysterious. He wants more power, which could make him a perfect agent for the villain. That has led to more rumors about what his real role is in the series.

What’s next for Mephisto in the MCU?

While Agatha All Along has introduced him, fans are eager to see how his storyline develops. As Marvel has confirmed previously, Sacha Baron Cohen will play a role in Ironheart, releasing next year. This villain is expected to have an immense impact on the future of the MCU.

The Hood is a character in Ironheart who wears a magical cloak and is linked to evil forces, possibly Mephisto. Based on how things were set up in Agatha All Along, it looks like his role will grow beyond this series.

Agatha All Along is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
