Chrissy Metz opened up about her journey towards forgiving her stepfather
Chrissy Metz opened up about the abuse suffered from her stepfather during her most recent appearence on The Jamie Kern Lima Show. Metz, who was born as the middle child among five siblings revealed that her stepfather singled her out because of her weight and she felt like she was living under a "magnifying glass".
As mentioned above, the actress explained the "mental, physical, emotional abuse" she suffered at the hands of her stepfather during her childhood, who even weighed her in the kitchen and threatened to lock up the cupboards. The actress recalled:
"The emotional stuff… they're like little nicks, little cuts and eventually you bleed out. It is painful."
Chrissy Metz added that she was trying to "slowly but surely" heal those wounds. At the root of her problems was the feeling that she was "unworthy". The actress elaborated that the abuse she suffered still affected the way she walked into a room as she desired to be "a people pleaser and a peacemaker". Metz asked:
"Why does my weight equate my worthiness? Or why does it bother him so much? Or what is he projecting onto me? What is that? And as a 12-year-old kid, it’s like, how do you reconcile that in your mind?"
However, therapy allowed Metz to work through some of her trauma which allowed her to forgive her mother, who she understood was "struggling" for a long time. She also had an empathetic outlook towards her stepfather's treatment of her and came to terms with his actions. Chrissy Metz explained:
"Now as an adult, I’m like, OK, maybe he actually loved me, didn’t know how to express it, and did it in such a difficult way that he thought he was being helpful. Like, he doesn’t want me to be unhealthy. He doesn’t want me to be a certain way. But also hurt people hurt people. And he was, I think, very hurt by his own father."
Chrissy Metz has previously opened up about the abuse she faced from her stepfather in her 2018 memoir, 'This Is Me: Loving the Person You Are Today'. In the book, she called her stepfather Trigger and wrote that he used to shove, slap, and punch her when she was growing up.
According to Metz's book, when she was growing up and weighed around 140 or 130 pounds, her stepfather used to sit on a chair as she got on a scale to weigh herself and shout "Good God almighty!" every time. Looking back while writing the memoir, Metz admitted that she would be fine with that weight at the moment however, she thought she was "gigantic". Chrissy Metz added:
"By then the beating had escalated. One time he hit me, and I looked right in his face. If I had a gun, I thought, I would shoot you,"
During her The Jamie Kern Lima Show appearence Chrissy Metz revealed that her stepfather recently passed away and it was a difficult time for her as apart from her acting coach, he was the only father figure she ever had. Metz's stepfather hadn't talked to her since she wrote the book as he felt like he was thrown under the bus.
When Chrissy Metz's stepfather was in hospice care, she wrote him an honest letter explaining that she was hurt but also loved him very much and hoped that he would be able to forgive her for anything he might've been upset about. Metz wrote to him that she forgave him.
Chrissy Metz's sister read her letter to her stepfather while Metz was on FaceTime. She was the last person he spoke to before passing away. The man said "Thank you" and also told his stepdaughter that she loved her. The actress acknowledged that this was "very important" for her. Metz said that she really did love her stepfather and was "really grateful" for him.
