A mysterious murder in High Potential episode 3

High Potential episode 3 opens with Ernest Lozano's corpse inside an uptown hotel bathtub. The room is filled with melted candles, clothes scattered everywhere, and a half-full glass.

All signs hint at a wild night that tragically ended in murder. Morgan observes minute but important details: the towel is folded incorrectly and most likely was used to clean the place of murder.

Another sign was the glass, wiped clean, indicated that Ernest had been doped, i.e. he could not even try to run away during the assault. The detectives identify the victim and discover he's from Mexico City. Then they think about why he was in Los Angeles.

The security video later proves that Ernest didn't come alone. There is a blonde woman who stepped out of the room just minutes after their arrival.

They investigate the blonde woman, Dr. Iris Bowman, a doctor who parked her red Kia at the hotel. The detectives find her and she openly admits having met Ernest three months ago.

She tells them that their relationship was casual, though it is revealed that she's a widow wearing her wedding ring. Iris elaborates that she left Ernest asleep in the bathtub, which fits with the timeline defined by the security footage from the hotel.

Nevertheless, even after the confession, Morgan continues to believe that Iris is not the murderer.

Her instincts are proven correct when she recalls that one of the candles had partially melted, indicating that the struggle must have occurred after Iris had left.

A case of stolen identity

The case takes a major turn when the real Ernest Lozano is found alive in Mexico City. He tells them that his wallet had been stolen during a previous visit to LA by a man resembling him; thus, the victim was using Ernest's identity.

This revelation sent the investigation back to square one as the detectives now had to determine who the victim was.

Morgan continues the detective work off the clock and brings her son, Eliot, into the case. While pouring over evidence, Morgan notices that the victim's cement is still on his shoes, and different stitching is found on his pants.

She concludes that the victim most likely went to a tailor from Madagascar, who does some specific sewing technique.

This leads the detectives to Eduardo Cortez, the real identity of the man found in the bathtub. It turns out that Eduardo had credit card fraud written all over his resume.

Presenting himself as Ernest, he was thriving in luxury and swindling the unsuspecting public. However, his lavish lifestyle was far from legitimate, and this opened the door to new suspects with motives for revenge.

Uncovering the truth

As the investigation deepens, Eduardo is found to have been accepting huge amounts of money from a frail lady called Glenda Walker who thought Eduardo, posing as Ernest, was to marry her.

Her son Kyle describes how his mother has been duped by Eduardo. This leads to a suspicion that Kyle might have a motive for Eduardo's murder.

Morgan's instincts guide her to the motivation that counts. Kyle was furious that Eduardo had bilked his mother. Yet, the case was not that simple.

It turns out that the fact that Dr. Iris Bowman was also involved in the crime during further probing. She also had an affair with Eduardo, who had fleeced her of $300,000.

Towards the end of High Potential episode 3, it is revealed both Kyle and Iris collaborated in evil, and Iris played an important role in getting Kyle to the hotel room and she drugged Eduardo.

High Potential episode 3’s climactic conclusion comes when Morgan and Karadec corner both Iris and Kyle. Both are implicated in Eduardo's murder, Iris allowing Kyle to reach the hotel room through the window after drugging Eduardo.

Kyle, full of anger because of his mother's suffering, committed the killing spree. High Potential episode 3 ends with both suspects brought in and a satisfying end to the case.
