Hollywood Black, the upcoming docuseries directed by Justin Simien, will be released on MGM+ on August 11, 2024. The official synopsis of the docuseries reads:
“Chronicling the history of cinema from a radically Black perspective, this docuseries unearths personal stories from actors, writers, directors and producers who fought for their place on the page, behind the camera and on the screen.”
The four-episode series delves into the experience of Black people in the film industry. It is inspired by the 2019 book Hollywood Black: The Stars, the Films, the Filmmakers by historian Donald Bogle.
Hollywood Black releases on August 11
The documentary series had its World Premiere Screening at the Tribeca Festival on June 15, 2024. The first episode of the docuseries will be released on August 11, 2024. The following table shows the complete list of the release dates for all four episodes.

Hollywood Black: Episodes and subject matter
The four episodes of the upcoming series are named:
- Episode 1: Built On Our Backs
- Episode 2: The Defiant Ones
- Episode 3: The Price of Admission
- Episode 4: Dear Black People
The first episode deals with Hollywood from the silent era to the late 1960s. During this period, Black people enter the industry for the first time, battling stereotypes and negativities. As the years go by, they establish a unique perception within Hollywood.
The second episode of the series highlights the Black experience in Hollywood vis-à-vis the racial politics of the '60s. It shows how the Black artists began asserting their identities and culture, telling their stories during this period.
The third episode primarily deals with the '90s. With the rise of several Black filmmakers and movie stars, the stories of Black people enjoy some mainstream success. And yet, there are other independent endeavors that show the lives of the non-mainstream Black communities.
The final episode of the docuseries looks at how Hollywood starts offering more opportunities to the Black artists in the 21st century. With the election of Barack Obama, the first ever Black President of the USA, Black lives and stories start getting more attention on screen, with some even achieving blockbuster status.
