Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon are two examples of a large and complex universe in which many subtle hints and connections enrich the Westeros lore. For instance, Arya Stark gave a hint that was central to House of the Dragon when she was in Harrenhal during her days in Game of Thrones.

Although it might have seemed like she was showing off her knowledge, this moment revealed important events and characters in House of the Dragon. This association gives fans an enhanced understanding of Targaryen's legacy and its impact on the realm.

Arya Stark’s conversation with Tywin Lannister in season 2 episode 7 of Game of Thrones serves as a bridge between the events of Game of Thrones and the historical narratives explored in House of the Dragon.

During the conversation between the two characters, it is revealed that Harrenhall was never built to sustain Dragon fire attacks, and with Aegon riding with his sister-wives and dragons, it was impossible for Harrenhal to survive.

Arya Stark was at Harrenhal when Tywin Lannister narrated Harrenhal’s history, noting its invincible walls built to ward off any attack by land forces. Nevertheless, he admits that these defenses were powerless against dragonfire, so when Aegon the Conqueror came and destroyed Harrenhal with dragonfire, no one could have saved it.

Arya then corrects Tywin by pointing out that Aegon Targaryen was not alone in his conquest; he had his sisters Rhaenys and Visenya who owned their dragons Meraxes and Vhagar, respectively.

This correction reveals Arya’s extensive knowledge regarding Targaryen's history thereby prefiguring Rhaenys and Visenya’s roles in House of the Dragon. It subtly prepares the audience for the rich backstory of the Targaryens, their dragons, and the pivotal role they played in shaping the Seven Kingdoms.

Exploring in detail about Harrenhal in House of the Dragon

One of the biggest and most powerful castles in Westeros, Harrenhal was built by King Harren Hoare of the Ironborn to consolidate his control over the Riverlands. The castle’s massive walls were designed to withstand any land-based assault, but it was finished after Aegon Targaryen, together with his dragons, started the war against Westeros.

Aegon’s dragon, Balerion the Black Dread, burned down the castle with dragonfire, killing King Harren and his sons while Harrenhall remains partially ruined.

The castle has a history filled with tales of curses and bad fortune. Every family that has held it after Harren has suffered a terrible fate, with common folk suggesting that some evil had befallen the castle. It is nearly impossible to maintain or defend due to its size, and it has never been fully restored since Aegon’s conquest.

What happened at Harrenhal in House of the Dragon?

For many important events happening in House of the Dragon, Harrenhal serves as a central place. Among other things, a Great Council takes place in a ruined great hall at Harrenhal during which Viserys I Targaryen is elected heir by dying King Jaehaerys I Targaryen. This council forms the basis for power struggles and conflicts throughout this series.

Lyonel Strong and his son Harwin died during a fire at Harrenhal, which was intentionally caused by Larys Strong. This supports the belief that there was indeed a curse on Harrenhal.

Daemon Targaryen later seizes Harrenhal for the Blacks. Arriving in a storm with his dragon Caraxes, Daemon overpowers the castle's minimal defenses and claims Harrenhal. The castellan, Ser Simon Strong, pledges loyalty to Rhaenyra Targaryen, driven by a personal vendetta against his nephew Larys Strong, who murdered Simon's father and brother.

Daemon orders Simon to begin repairs on Harrenhal to prepare it for garrisoning an army and to summon Grover Tully for negotiations.

Additionally, Harrenhal becomes the backdrop for another mysterious and foreboding scene involving Daemon. A dark-haired woman warns Daemon of his impending death at Harrenhal, adding to the castle’s eerie and cursed legacy.
