House of the Dragon season 2 episode 5 was released on HBO and Max on July 14, 2024, and the series has reached the story's midpoint. The episode focused on the aftermath of the battle at Rook's Rest, with both Black and Green troops retreating and focusing on plans.

At King's Landing, the main focus is whether Aegon will survive being burnt and injured in the dragon fight. Aemond is elected to rule in his stead, snubbing Alicent's role on the council. The people of King's Landing are also barricaded into the kingdom as tempers rise.

On the other hand, Rhaenyra's forces try to cope with Rhaenys' death. Daemon tries to assemble an army in the Riverlands while troubled by strange visions. Jacaerys goes to the Frey Towers to negotiate a deal, and Mysaria gives Rhaenyra a strategy to fight the war.

However, the ending of House of the Dragon season 2 episode 5 brings a ray of hope for the Blacks, as Jacaerys and Rhaenyra come up with a plan. They decide to go through their old records and find long-lost Targaryen family members who may claim and ride dragons on their behalf. After losing Rhaenys, this is the only way they can use dragon-riders to multiply their strongholds.

What is Rhaenyra and Jacaerys' plan of action at the end of House of the Dragon season 2 episode 5?

Jacaerys (Jace) returns from the Frey Towers after striking a deal with them to bend the knee to Rhaenyra. He has a heated discussion with his mother after she chastises him for leaving before telling her.

Jace says that he needs to be out making allies and defeating enemy forces. Rhaenyra tells him that she wishes the same because she feels trapped at Dragonstone, but cannot risk the safety of the people closest to her.

The mother-son pair discuss the best way forward in the war, and realize that they need to involve more dragons. Rhaenyra realizes that their side has many unclaimed dragons, but not enough people to ride them into battle. It seems to be a problem with no solution until Jace comes up with a plan.

He explains to his mother that there must be many Targaryens who married into other families or were removed from the main family tree for some reason. But, with Targaryen blood, they would still have some sort of claim on the line. By extension, these distant relatives might be able to control and claim dragons too.

Rhaenyra realizes that Dragonstone might have many old scrolls containing records of old Targaryen family lines. She and Jace decide to go through them and see if the idea has any merit.

This decision might lead to their side becoming stronger, but might also backfire and have devastating consequences. Trying to tame a dragon means playing with fire after all, in quite a literal sense.

Aegon, after being injured in the Rook's rest battle, spends the episode in a coma. The palace physicians try to heal his wounds but he has a lot of internal injuries. His mother Alicent spends most of her time worrying about him.

In a heart-wrenching moment towards the end of House of the Dragon season 2 episode 5, Alicent cries a little at her son's bedside. She touches his face gently and then leaves the room.

Right after Alicent leaves, Aegon's breathing pattern changes and he whispers the word 'mummy'. Presumably, he was trying to call out to Alicent but she could not hear him.

This change in his conscious state indicates that Aegon will survive his injury, even if it takes him a long time to heal. Even in the books by George R.R. Martin, Aegon's death is not after the Battle at Rook's Rest. If the show decides to go by the book, then Aegon will live to see the war through.
