Episode five of season two of House of the Dragon started on a low-key note following the drastic and downhearted events at the Battle of Rook's Rest. The episode, titled Regent, aired on Monday, July 15, 2024, and showed viewers the aftermath of the death of Rhaenys. The viewers felt the sorrow of losing Corly's wife and Rhaenyra's greatest warrior and council member.
The episode served as the calm after the storm as it unfolded and planted seeds for what is to be expected from the latter half of the season. Rhaenyra and Jacaerys Velaryon will now be looking for people with Valyrian blood so that they can ride the unclaimed dragons.
In House of the Dragon, these illegitimate sons or daughters are referred to as Dragon Seeds. In this period known as the Red Sowing, many people perished and burned while attempting to claim the dragons, which fans will witness in the upcoming episodes.
House of the Dragon season 2 episode 5: Book vs Series
1) The generational feud
The first difference in episode five of House of the Dragon starts with Ser Aemos Bracken, the Head of House Bracken, meeting Willem Blackwood. Daemon Targaryen has arranged the meeting between the Brackens and the Blackwoods.
In the meeting, Wilem Blackwood told Ser Aemos to surrender his house to Daemon and to bend his knee. However, Ser Aemos Bracken passed away during the Battle of the Burning Mill in Fire & Blood. Therefore, this plot and scene were a creative liberty taken by the show's creators.
2) Alys Rivers and her relationship with Aemond
In episode 5 of House of the Dragon, Alys Rivers witnesses Daemon doing his chores as a carpenter, trying to fix Harrenhall. That is when she realizes that Daemon is not good at this job, and talks to him, even mentioning Vhagar.
Alys also tells Daemon that he should behave like a lord and not a woodsman. Daemon responds by telling her that she should hope and pray that she never meets Aemond, the one-eyed Targaryen.
According to the plot in Fire & Blood, Aemond has moved to Harrenhall and fallen in love with Alys Rivers, even having a child with her. The show, on the other hand, is deviating from this sub-plot, as seen in episode five
3) Lord Corlys Velaryon as the Hand of the Queen
Lord Corlys and Rhaenyra are seen grieving Rhaenys and her dragon Meleys, who died at the Battle at Rook's Rest in episode four. The battle was the first Dance of the Dragons, following which Lord Corlys spoke to Baela about it in episode five. That was when she told him that it was Rhaenys who chose to go in the battle.
The book and the series are similar to this point, however, the difference comes in when Lord Corlys is appointed as the Hand of the Queen. On the show, it is Rhaenyra who asks Baela to appoint Lord Corlys Velaryon as the Hand but in the book, it was Jacaeys Velaryon who did so. Lord Corlys was given the position since he has always been a great ally and Targaryen supporter.
4) Daemon's character
In the latest installment, while Daemon threatens the Brackens with Caraxes by his side, the Brackens don’t bow to Daemon. In the books, Daemon did not try and fail, as shown in the episode, because the altercation between the Blackwoods and the Brackens never occurred in Fire & Blood.
The show also portrayed Daemon having visions, mostly due to the potion he consumed, or was still consuming, which Alys Rivers gave him. However, in Fire & Blood, Daemon and his visions were mostly linked to the cursed Harrenhall, which was built of Weirwood trees. Also, in the books, Alys Rivers had little to no interaction with Daemon and she was a devoted lover to Aemond, the one-eyed Targaryen.
