House of the Dragon season 2 episode 7 premiered on July 28, 2024, bringing back another packed episode that was enough to leave fans breathless. Finally adapting the anticipated Red Sowing, an infamous event in Fire and Blood that saw Dragonseeds and some others stepping up to tame the big dragons, Vermithor and Silverwing, leading to tragic consequences.
Yet, this episode also saw Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) finding herself with three Dragonriders, a development that has effectively weighed the war in the Black side's favor. Moreover, this episode also saw King's Landing and Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) suffering some huge blows, both with the administration of the state as well as in their fight against the Black side.
With a final roundoff of Daemon's quest (and possible redemption), this served as a complete episode that could lead directly to a packed finale. Sadly, after next week, we will be in for a long, long period of waiting ahead of the third season.

House of the Dragon season 2 episode 7 takes us to the bloody Red Sowing
As we have seen with the two previous episodes, the show has quite perfectly assembled the many pieces that would form the whole picture. After it was teased in the fifth episode and bolstered in the sixth one, House of the Dragon season 2 episode 7 starts The Red Sowing, with Rhaneyra's aid, Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno) sending word about requiring dragon seeds to the smallfolk of King's Landing.
This is shortly after Rhaenyra meets with Addam of Hull and he pledges his loyalty to the queen after claiming Seasmoke.
This leads to many contenders taking on ships and leaving for Dragonstone. Despite Aemond's orders to curb the smallfolk leaving and entering King's Landing, the administration seems quite useless in carrying out the King's orders.
The party that goes to Dragonstone includes Ulf the White (who was peer pressured into taking part in this after claiming to be a Targaryen for some time) and Hugh Hammer (who genuinely seems more Targaryen than many of the people who bear the name).
Rhaenyra summons Vermithor after the dragon keepers decide not to participate in the experiment of selecting dragon riders. Vermithor not only rejects his new rider but also rains down fire and death on everyone in the area.
While this gives one of the show's most visually compelling sequences, Vermithor's chaos seems ready to consume all in its path, further dumping tragedy on Rhaenyra's side.
But Hugh Hammer manages to face the dragon and ultimately Vermithor gives in, taking Hugh as his rider. On the other end, in not-so-glorious fashion, Ulf the White also bonds with Silverwing and flies over King's landing, rightfully garnering Aemond's wrath. Only this time, Aemond's big dragon is not enough, giving a satisfying conclusion to House of the Dragon season 2, episode 7.
King's Landing has perhaps not seen worse
House of the Dragon season 2 episode 7 also explores a variety of themes in King's Landing. This includes but is not limited to, the poor administration, which is easily thrown into a frenzy by Mysaria, who is seemingly the strongest of Rhaenyra's warriors, even though she never picks up a sword or rides a dragon.
The dynamic between the council has never been shakier and it seems increasingly unlikely that Aemond will be able to hold the fort if no guiding hand helps the young King Regent.
To add to this, Alicent (Olivia Cooke), who has pretty much been at the forefront of the story so far, retreats into the woods and assesses her position after being sidelined by her sons and the councilmen. It seems unlikely that Alicent will bounce back soon.
Though House of the Dragon season 2 episode 7 gives a glimmer of hope with the mention of Daeron Targaryen, we are yet to see the youngest brother.
In an interesting twist, we see Aemond retreating from a fight for the first time in this episode, adding to the appeal of the storytelling, which has so far been brilliant.
Daemon Targaryen is back in action
While not in the most conventional way as one would hope, this episode does show a very interesting arc of Daemon, who does get the support of the Riverlands, after a bold act from Oscar Tully (Archie Barnes), who bravely speaks up against Daemon but pledges his and the rest of Riverland's support for Rhaenyra's claim.
We finally get to witness Daemon picking up the sword after a long gap as he honors Oscar Tully's wishes and beheads Lord Blackwater for his war crimes. The surprising twist with Oscar Tully's character perhaps makes him the standout character and performer this week.
All in all, House of the Dragon season 2 episode 7 seemingly brings together the key pieces for next week's finale and also takes viewers through an intense episode that was full of surprises. It is perhaps as good as the penultimate episode should be and deserves to be recognized as such.
House of the Dragon season 2 episode 7 is now streaming on Max.
