Given the anticipation for the Dance of the Dragons reaching a fever pitch after the end of the first season, House of the Dragon season 2 is finally on its way, marking an explosive return. The series was renewed in less than a week, on August 26, 2022, and was fast-tracked due to the amount of positive reception it gained by shattering HBO’s record for the biggest premiere.
Although there is a wave of excitement for the fantasy epic’s return, amidst the hiatus, the show also went through some unanticipated changes. Miguel Sapochnik, who served as the director and co-showrunner for the first season, has stepped down but will remain in the House of the Dragon family as one of the executive producers.
Much to fans’ surprise, Alan Taylor, who helmed the Game of Thrones episodes, will take on the mantle as the director for the sequel. Follow along with the article to learn more about House of the Dragon season 2.
House of the Dragon season 2 will be released on June 16, 2024
As confirmed, House of the Dragon season 2 will be released on June 16, 2024. Unlike the previous season, the sequel will run for eight episodes from June 16 to August 4, 2024, each having an expected run time of 54-68 minutes, similar to season 1. The second season began filming at Warner Bros. Studio in Leavesden, Watford, England, on April 11, 2023.
Later, the filming was moved to Cáceres, Spain on May 18, 2023. The Leavesden’s OSVP stage, which was used mostly for the first season, was shut down and was later converted into a soundstage. House of the Dragon faced no production delays, unlike most of the series and shows that went on hiatus indefinitely due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.
The show remained unaffected by the ongoing strikes due to its large ensemble of British cast working under local rules governed by the sister union Equity, formerly known as the British Actors’ Equity Association. On September 29, 2023, the filming for the sequel was finally wrapped up, bringing joy to fans who awaited the news since the series went under production.
