The House of the Dragon season 2 finale, which premiered on August 4, 2024, saw the Targaryen Civil War finally begin in full force. Titled The Queen Who Ever Was, the episode saw Rhaenyra finally meeting her assembled dragon riders and being reunited with Daemon Targaryen. Flying to Harrenhal, she was met by her husband, who finally bent the knee and recognized her as queen.

Disclaimer: Potential spoilers for House of the Dragon season 3 to follow

However, that wasn't Rhaenyra's only reunion in the House of the Dragon season 2 finale. As she prepared to attack Team Green with the upper hand, she met Alicent Hightower. Recognizing her mistake, Hightower agreed that she would let Rhaenyra take over King's Landing and take over the Iron Throne.

But, before the fans could see that happen, the episode ended. With fans now likely having to wait another two years for season 3, the cliffhanger is sure to generate excitement. From Rhaenyra actually taking the throne to Daemon and Aemond's battle to come, there is a lot fans can expect from the next season of House of the Dragon.

What can fans expect from House of the Dragon season 3?

Rhaenyra finally taking the Iron Throne

In the House of the Dragon season 2 finale, Alicent tells Rhaenyra that she finally sees her mistake, and when Aemond is away joining Cole at the Riverlands, she will let her march into King's Landing and take the Iron Throne. If the source material, Fire & Blood, is anything to go by, then Rhaenyra will surely be getting her throne soon.

In the book, after a small battle for King's Landing, Rhaenyra finally gets to the Iron Throne. She then has Alicent and Helaena taken as prisoners. However, given the stronger bond between Rhaenyra and Alicent in the show, things could change. However, she encounters Aegon, as Lord Strong has him smuggled out of the city.

Aemond and Daemon's battle

In the House of the Dragon season 2 finale, Helaena finally confronts Aemond about attacking Aegon and predicting that his death is to come above God's Eye. Again, looking back at Fire & Blood, Aemond does actually die above God's Eye in the books. And his death comes at the hands of none other than Daemon Targaryen.

In the books, they meet above God's Eye, the lake located in the Riverlands. There, Daemon and Aemond meet on their dragons and battle it out. Daemon wins the fight by driving his sword through Aemond's bad eye, but it comes at the cost of his life as well. Both he and Aemon die along with their dragons, with their bodies being lost to the lake.

However, Aemond's body is eventually found years later.

Aegon taking Dragonstone

After Rhaenyra takes over King's Landing, Baela remains on Dragonstone in Fire & Blood. Meanwhile, Aegon is in Essos and being nursed back to health while he waits for Rhaenyra and Aemond to destroy each other. But after being nursed back, he flies to Dragonstone, where he convinces the Team Black members there to help him get back the throne.

He then challenges Baela to a battle and kills her dragon, but spares her life. This certainly is a likely thing to happen in House of the Dragon season 3.
