The upcoming episode of People Magazine Presents: The Crimes of 2010s will cover the death of Adea Shabani and her boyfriend Chris Spotz, who shot himself after the police tried to stop him in relation to Adea's murder. The 2018 case remains one of the most prolific ones in the history of LA and remains officially unsolved.
This case is the subject of People Magazine Presents: The Crimes of 2010s episode 9. It will air at 8.00 PM on Investigation Discovery on August 29, 2024. The synopsis for this episode, titled To Live and Die in L.A., reads:
"A 25-year-old Macedonian woman with aspirations of stardom moves to Hollywood to pursue her dreams of becoming famous; on February 23, 2018, the blonde-haired, blue-eyed bombshell leaves her apartment and vanishes, never to be seen again."
Chris Spotz is considered the chief suspect in the case but he could never be charged because he led the police on a high-speed chase before taking his own life with a handgun, leaving this case with many mysteries, which will likely remain unsolved for the foreseeable future.
Who was Chris Spotz and why were the police looking for him?
Chris Spotz was dating Adea Shabani when she disappeared on February 23, 2018. In fact, she disappeared after leaving with him on a road-bound trip towards Northern California. Chris was also an aspiring actor who was enrolled at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting. His relationship was Adea was quite complicated because he was already engaged to Mary Elmalak at the time.
He was the last person seen leaving with Adea before she seemingly disappeared. According to his version of the story, he and Adea left for Northern California, but they got into a bitter fight en route. He ultimately dropped her at Santa Clarita, about 25 miles from her home, before driving away.
From the very start, his version of the story seemed to have certain inconsistencies that did not sit well with the investigators. This, combined with his complex relationship with Adea Shabani, made Chris Spotz the prime subject.
To add to this, Chris left for his family home in Colorado with his fiancée, Mary, on March 1. Investigators were looking to question him during this time, but his sudden escape to Colorado seemed to be even more alarming for the authorities.
How did Chris Spotz die?
The authorities deciphered that Adea's Toyota Tacoma was missing. This was also the car that Chris Spotz and Adea Shabani used for the drive from where she never returned. After initially searching for it, the authorities spotted it near Hesperia on March 22. Chris was driving it.
Authorities attempted to stop the car but Chris led them on a long chase from Hesperia to Corona. Authorities reportedly tried to stop him by deploying many vehicles but got off the Green River Road freeway and stopped on Rio Vista Street, south of the 91 freeway.
When the authorities tried to stop him, he fatally shot himself with a handgun. He was reported dead immediately.
After his death, authorities used his phone to track his movement on the day of Adea Shabani's death and it all seemed to hint that he was the murderer, after all.
Sadly, because he passed away without any closure, Adea Shanbani's murder was never formally solved.
People Magazine Presents: The Crimes of 2010s will cover this case in more detail.
