How to Die Alone Season 1: Recap of episodes 1 to 4

The first four episodes of How to Die Alone Season 1 show Melissa Jackson, a 35-year-old single woman whose life drastically changes following a near-death experience. The character is portrayed by Natasha Rothwell, who works at JFK airport but ironically fears flying and is equally afraid of stepping out of her comfort zone.

In the first episode, “Stop Living,” Melissa's 35th birthday turns into a mess after a series of unfortunate events. She spends the night alone, fighting a rat for crab rangoon, putting together Swedish furniture by herself, and finally getting hurt when a dresser falls on her, ultimately ending up in the hospital.

As she wakes up at the hospital and talks to a co-patient, Elise, Melissa realizes she has no one to count on in an emergency.

Episodes two, “Lie and Deny,” and three, “Burn Ridges,” show Melissa trying harder to change her life. Her friendship with Rory, her best friend and co-worker, becomes a big part of the story as their relationship falls apart.

Melissa makes reckless decisions, like using Elise’s credit cards and buying a ticket to Maui for Alex’s wedding, her ex-fling. These decisions lead her on a chaotic but freeing journey. Along the way, Melissa deals with her lingering feelings for Alex, remembers the hurtful things she did to ruin their relationship, and accepts her past mistakes.

By the fourth episode, “Settle,” Melissa shows signs of personal growth with new challenges coming her way. Her relationship with Rory starts to suffer because he feels left out as she becomes more determined to improve her life.

Melissa also starts to connect with Terrance, a co-worker, suggesting a potential romantic interest. As her past, present, and future come together, Melissa's path to self-discovery is set to be both funny and touching as the season continues.
