What If…? season 3 has returned with new explorations of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It premiered on Disney+ on December 22, 2024; the animated anthology series offers fresh multiverse stories with some of the MCU’s most beloved characters. What If…? season 3 final episode is scheduled to release on December 29, 2024.

This season has aired the first seven episodes, with only one episode remaining. Each episode is released daily and offers a new multiverse adventure, from alternate timelines to unexpected twists.

Storyline of What If…? season 3 so far

What If...? season 3 goes deeper into the multiverse of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Important scenes from the MCU movies are reimagined with new twists. Each episode looks at different realities where important events happen in various ways.

Bruce Banner accidentally created a monstrous kaiju called the "Apex" after bombarding himself with gamma radiation. The Avengers built mechas to combat it but were defeated. Survivors battled the gamma monsters for ten years. Banner, becoming a "Mega-Hulk," killed the Apex and led its army, eventually ruling them on a remote island.

Agatha Harkness became a Hollywood actress in the Golden Age, aiming to siphon the power of the Celestial Tiamut. She convinced Kingo to help with the ritual. After betraying Arishem and defeating him, Agatha absorbed Tiamut’s power, becoming a Celestial. Kingo persuaded her to join him in the movie industry, leaving her newfound power behind.

Furthermore, in the series, Alexei Shostakov saved the Starks from Bucky Barnes in 1991 while recovering super-soldier serum. Shostakov helped them find the "Rook" in Las Vegas, revealing him as Obadiah Stane. Barnes fought for Hydra while Shostakov destroyed the last serum vial and fled. Later, Shostakov joined Avengers.

Howard the Duck and Darcy Lewis had Byrdie, an egg child. Many factions, including Thanos and Dormammu, chased the egg across space. After the egg hatched into a human/duck hybrid, they brought Byrdie home, and Nick Fury agreed to let her stay with her family.

Quentin Beck led the Iron Federation after the Emergence split Earth. Rivi Williams joins an Alliance to defeat Beck. She destroyed Beck's nanites as a human-synthezoid, breaking his illusion. Williams defeated the Federation and showed the Avengers logo, giving survivors hope.

In 1872, Shang-Chi and Kate Bishop fought the corrupted Xu Xialing, now the Hood. They freed Chinese immigrants after discovering the Hood's brainwashing plan. Bishop killed Xialing for not joining her. The duo left with the immigrants while the Watcher was punished for interfering.

In episode 7 titled What If... the Watcher Disappeared?, Captain Peggy Carter led a group to stop multiverse incursions, the Watcher was put on trial by three other Watchers. After several failed attempts, Carter met Infinity Ultron, who helped them get the Watcher back. Ultron took in a piece of the Watcher's observatory, which helped the team fight the invaders and save the multiverse.
