Jessica Capshaw opened up about her "horrible" and "deeply sad" miscarriage
In the latest episode of the Call It What It Is iHeartRadio podcast, Grey's Anatomy stars Jessica Capshaw and Camilla Luddington responded to a listener's question for advice. The listener, Jess, who has two children of "very similar ages" to Luddington's, asked whether having a third child was the right decision.
Luddington shared that she felt her family was complete with two children, explaining that her "anxiety" might overwhelm her to the point where she wouldn't feel capable of being a good mom. She noted that Capshaw, who has four kids, might have a different answer. For Capshaw, the answer was "very personal" and depended on how on-board with the decision Jess and her partner were.
She was not overwhelmed by having four kids, as she came from a very big family. Capshaw, the daughter of actress Kate Capshaw and stepdaughter of Steven Spielberg, married entrepreneur, author, and co-founder of The Honest Company, Christopher Gavigan, in 2004.
The couple shares four children: 16-year-old Luke Hudson Gavigan, 13-year-old Eve Augusta Gavigan, 12-year-old Poppy James Gavigan, and 8-year-old Josephine Kate Gavigan.
During the podcast, Capshaw recalled considering having a fourth child when her daughter Poppy was two years old, and her husband agreed. However, this time, tragedy struck. Jessica Capshaw explained:
"I got pregnant and I was so excited and I had never had any issues before getting pregnant. I was very lucky and I'm very grateful. And then all of a sudden, at my 10-week appointment, [I] went in for the ultrasound, was by myself, totally unsuspecting, and there was no heartbeat."
The actress described the situation as "horrible," calling it the "most shocking and deeply, deeply sad thing." As this was a new situation for her, Jessica Capshaw had no idea what to do. She remembered experiencing "deep sadness" when thinking about whether she'd inform her husband over the phone or wait till they were together.
Thankfully, her doctor, who had delivered her three previous babies, told her that she needed to do a D&C, a procedure to remove tissue from inside the uterus. Jessica Capshaw called her doctor the "best doctor in the whole world." The actress elaborated:
"I was very very fortunate that I had a doctor who was so compassionate and took her time to explain to me what was going on and to teach me, and then to be with me in that pain and in that disappointment, and that I had a partner that was there to be with me in that pain and in that disappointment, and then you know, life carried on."
Despite the setback, the story had a happy ending as the actress ended up having a fourth child. When her youngest child, Josephine Kate Gavigan, was born on May 2, 2016, Jessica Capshaw took to Instagram to welcome the baby with a picture of the child. She captioned her post:
"I am endlessly grateful for her safe arrival and my heart is so full of love that it threatens to burst..."
More recently, in May of this year, 8-year-old Josephine accompanied her mother to Paris, where they attended a Taylor Swift concert and even got to meet the singer backstage.
