Only Murders in the Building season 4 episode 4 featured some really intriguing developments, but nothing was as surprising and perhaps as innovative as bringing back Paul Rudd, who originally played Ben Glenroy in the third season. Not only is Rudd back, but he is also one of the funniest characters in the standout episode.
As most fans remember, Paul Rudd's character was killed off in the previous season, which also formed the crux of the mystery. Yet, the show figured out a way to bring him back. This time, however, Rudd is not Ben Glenroy. Instead, he is the actor's stunt double, Glenn Stubbins.
In Only Murders in the Building season 4, Stubbins is depicted as an Irish stunt double who is out of work after Ben's death and is in quite a desperate state looking for work. He helps the trio investigate in exchange for a promise that they will give him a part in the upcoming podcast adaptation.
This seems to hint that Only Murders in the Building season 4 will feature more of Paul Rudd, which will make for an excellent addition to the star-studded cast.
Is Paul Rudd going to appear in the rest of Only Murders in the Building season 4?
The never-aging Paul Rudd is back from the dead (again) as a new character, and perhaps with a funnier set of dialogues and actions. But the big question is whether this was a tiny cameo or if is he going to stick around.
As per the show's EP, Paul Rudd is not done with Only Murders in the Building season 4 yet. It is not clear whether the character will stay in a recurring role for the rest of the season, but he will appear again in this season.
While discussing this episode with The Wrap on September 17, showrunner John Hoffman said:
"I love Paul Rudd and Paul Rudd loves being on the show and we’re doing a season about stunt doubles. We had a season last season where Ben Glenroy died, and who was Ben Glenroy’s stunt double is not an unfathomable question. And we have dopplegängers all throughout the season,"
He further added:
"It just like like, ‘Oh, my God, that’s how we bring him back!’ All of that paralleling with Charles and Sazz felt sweet and right, and a beautiful opportunity for Paul to come back...And there’s a lot going on with that character beyond this episode,"
So this confirms that Rudd has a bigger role to play and perhaps Glenn Stubbins is also an important part of the story from this point on. If Glenn appears in enough episodes this season, he may become a bigger part of the story than Ben Glenroy was. Given how the show functions, they may actually do this for the laughs.
Moreover, this time Rudd becomes a part of the huge celebrity roaster, who are all important parts of this season's story.
The upcoming episode of Only Murders in the Building season 4 will continue the story of Charles, Mabel, and Oliver's investigation but will also integrate the Hollywood cast and crew members in a bigger capacity.
It will air on September 24, 2024. Stay tuned for more updates.
