Who was the Night Stalker?
Ricardo Leyva Muñoz Ramirez, known as the Night Stalker, was born on February 29, 1960, in El Paso, Texas, to immigrant parents from Mexico. Being the youngest in a family of five, he lived in an unhealthy household under an abusive father all through his childhood.
As a child, he suffered traumatic head injuries that led to the development of a type of temporal lobe epilepsy, which people presume might have contributed to his being violent later in life.
At the age of 12, Ramirez was heavily influenced by his cousin, Mike, a Vietnam veteran who vividly recounted war atrocities, introducing slides of pictures to his young audience. Perhaps that already lit the fuse for a vicious desire within Ramirez himself. Drug experimentation and an interest in Satanism and the occult disabused him around the time.
After moving to California in his early twenties, he soon became addicted to cocaine and financed the addiction through theft and burglary. All these things shaped him into what would become one of the most notorious serial murderers in America, as well as one that would leave an indelible mark not only upon himself but on the many people who suffered because of his depravity.
How did Richard Ramirez die?
Richard Ramirez, called the Night Stalker, died in Marin General Hospital, California, on June 7, 2013. He was sentenced to death at San Quentin State Prison and was awaiting execution for being guilty of 13 murders, among other crimes. However, his death was attributed to natural causes and not execution.
In his later years, his health worsened, with one of the illnesses being B-cell lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. Most illnesses were due to chronic hepatitis C, assumed to be from his history of IV drug abuse at some time in his life. These issues, combined with the torturous conditions of imprisonment against his previous drug abuse, lead him to simply deteriorate health-wise.
Ramirez was moved to an external medical facility from the prison hospital of San Quentin when his health deteriorated. He was 53 years old at the time of his passing.
How was Richard Ramirez's last days before he died?
Richard Ramirez spent his final days in Marin General Hospital, California, in June 2013. At 53 years old, he was transferred there from San Quentin's death row due to severe health issues.
In his final moments, Richard Ramirez likely died alone, as prison regulations do not allow visitors in secured hospital rooms. Inmates in such conditions are usually shackled to their beds with a guard stationed outside. Nurses may check on the patient, but often, death is only discovered during these routine checks.
Richard Ramirez remained unrepentant for his crimes until the end. A known Satan worshipper, he spent 23 years on death row without showing remorse. Experts believe he stayed true to his dark and defiant persona. At his sentencing years earlier, he had declared:
I am beyond good and evil. I will be avenged.
