What is the Challengers about?

Challengers is a sports/romance film directed by Luca Guadagnino (known for Call Me by Your Name, Suspiria, and Bones and All). The tennis-based drama follows the life of three rising tennis players, Tashi, Art, and Patrick. It portrays the players in their teenage years and also later in their lives as adults.

The film portrays the gritty world of tennis and also follows an intense love triangle between the three lead characters. Zendaya's Tashi is an aspiring pro-tennis player whose career plans get derailed due to a severe injury. However, she marries one of her friends, Art. However, another player, Patrick, has always been in the fray, as he used to be Art's best friend and Tashi's ex-boyfriend. The love triangle gets more complicated as the story intensifies, making for a thrilling watch.

"Tennis player turned coach Tashi (Zendaya) has taken her husband, Art (Mike Faist), and transformed him into a world-famous grand slam champion. To jolt him out of his recent losing streak, she makes him play a “Challenger” event — close to the lowest level of pro tournament — where he finds himself standing across the net from his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend (Josh O’Connor)."
