Hulu's How To Die Alone is a comedy series, gearing up for its release on September 13, 2024. It was created by Natasha Rothwell, who also stars in the lead role. The story kicks off on what seems to be the worst birthday of Mel's life. Her friends have abandoned her, her family relationships are strained, and to top it off she suffers an embarrassing accident that almost ends her life. This near-death experience serves as a wake-up call for Mel. She is forced to confront the choices she has made and the fears that have held her back.
Determined to break free from her self-imposed limitations, Mel embarks on a journey of self-discovery and reinvention. She decides that it's time to start living her life to the fullest, no matter how messy or unpredictable it might get. Mel's transformation is marked by a series of bold decisions, including taking chances on romance.

Natasha Rothwell shared during the Television Critics Association press tour, that the show's writers often compared Mel's character (the protagonist) to Roomba, a robotic vacuum cleaner. Rothwell explained:
"A Roomba has to hit walls in order to clean up the area, Mel is a human Roomba that has awakened. She realized she's been sleepwalking."
She further added:
"She's able to clean up her life, but we get to see those walls, those moments where it's scary and there's an opportunity to quit. We wanted to tell a story where she keeps going."
