What did Luigi Mangione do?
Brian Thompson was killed by a masked shooter outside a Manhattan hotel on December 4, 2024. On December 9, Mangione was arrested in relation to the crime at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
At the time of his arrest, he was allegedly in possession of a gun, bullets, multiple fake IDs, and cash. The incident sparked a huge controversy regarding the normalization of violence in the US and the state of the healthcare system.
Luigi Mangione belongs to a prominent Maryland family. He had an elite private education and also went to an Ivy League college. His action has deeply shocked friends and family and according to a law enforcement bulletin, Mangione was allegedly motivated by resentment towards what he terms "parasitic" health insurance companies.
According to the police, there also exists a handwritten document that expressed his "ill will" towards corporate America. According to investigators, the words "deny", "defend" and "depose" were found written on the shell casings recovered from the crime site.
Law enforcement sources have said that the three words may be a reference to the "three Ds of insurance," which are the tactics that insurance companies use to reject claims by patients.
Mangione's resentments stem from his own health issues allegedly. He was a member of a surfing community in Hawaii but had to give that up owing to his debilitating back pain. But how much of his own health issues and experience with insurance companies shaped his motivations, is yet to be discovered.
As of now, Mangione is being held at a Pennsylvania prison and he is awaiting extradition to NYC where he will be tried on a charge of second-degree murder.
