Apple TV+’s Criminal Record is a crime-thriller TV series that was first released in January 2024, with a total of eight episodes. Starring Cush Jumbo and Peter Capaldi as detectives Daniel Hegarty and June Lenker, who decide to investigate a cold murder case after receiving an anonymous call related to it.
The series boasts of the following official synopsis, according to IMDB:
“Follows two brilliant detectives in a tug of war over a historic murder conviction and the quest to find common ground in a polarized Britain.”
With Season 1 receiving a rating of 7.1, fans have long wondered if Apple TV+ will be releasing a Season 2. That has now been confirmed, with Apple TV+ confirming that the next iteration is finally in the works. Set in modern-day London, Season 2 is set to continue the journey of detective-duo.
Criminal Record renewed for Season 2 by Apple TV+
Apple TV+ recently announced the renewal along with a synopsis about the upcoming Season 2. While no release date has yet been announced, Season 2 is set to take things up a notch:
“June Lenker (Jumbo) is the senior officer on the scene when a political rally is attacked by far-right counter-protestors. The violent clash leaves a young man dead and June, consumed with guilt, is desperate to bring the unknown killer to justice. It seems as if her best hope is Daniel Hegarty (Capaldi), now a key figure in the shadowy world of police intelligence. He may have the answers she needs but to get his help she will have to accept a dangerous bargain.”
The news comes six months after the release of Season 1, and was initially hinted at by Cush Jumbo, during his appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen.
When asked, the actor confirmed that there will indeed be a Season 2, with the following statement:
“There will be, yeah.”
Now, the same has been confirmed by the network, which is bound to delight fans. Created by BAFTA nominee Paul Rutman, Criminal Record puts the two protagonists on a complicated investigation that is spurred by an anonymous call. The two detectives initially clash, before realizing that they need each other to get to the bottom of the cold case.
Season 2 is also expected to result in some new faces being introduced, with DS June Lenker set to be involved in a political case. After a rally supported by the far-right, a young man ends up dying during an altercation, leading to June launching a personal investigation to ensure justice is served to the perpetrators.
He will be seen once again taking the help of Daniel Hegarty, who was seen entering police intelligence in the first season. Thus, with Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo reutrning, a range of other faces such as Aysha Kala, Shaun Dooley, Tom Moutchi, Charlie Creed-Miles, Dionne Brown, Zoë Wanamaker, Cathy Tyson, and Stephen Campbell Moore can all be expected to reprise their roles.
There is yet to be the announcement of a release date for season 2, with Criminal Record Season 1 being praised for its stark accuracy when it comes to the various intricacies of the legal system.
