The status of Euphoria season 3 has been up in the air for a while now. Concerns over the status of the series ramped up after series creator Sam Levinson's other headlining series, The Idol, was panned by audiences and critics alike.
On November 8, an HBO spokesperson quashed all the cancellation rumors and shared that they were "absolutely false." Additionally, a July 12, 2024 report from TheWrap, revealed that the series will go into production in January 2025. Euphoria became popular among fans when it first premiered on June 16, 2019, and the second season of the show concluded on February 27, 2022.
In a statement given on July 2024, HBO EVP Francesca Orsi had this to say:
"I am thrilled that we are ready to begin production on ‘Euphoria’ in January. We could not be happier with our creative partnership with Sam and this incredible cast. We look forward to bringing this new season of ‘Euphoria’ to life for the fans."
Euphoria season 3 will enter production in 2025
HBO announced on Friday, July 12, 2024, that Euphoria season 3 was set to enter production in January 2025. The series has been on an extended hiatus since season 2's ending, following which the main cast members pursued their separate projects, and Sam Levinson went on to helm The Idol alongside The Weeknd.
The Idol lasted for only a single season and was not well received by critics and audiences, many of whom began having doubts about Sam Levinson's capabilities as a showrunner. Much of this was driven by TV Line reporting in June 2023 that he'd taken over the show in the middle of production and heavily retooled it.
This, followed by a lack of updates on Euphoria's future, has fueled speculation on the series' future until HBO stepped in to clarify matters. An earlier March 2024 report from TheWrap claimed that Euphoria season 3's production had been delayed as the cast was given permission to pursue other opportunities. In the same report, a spokesperson released the following statement:
"HBO and Sam Levinson remain committed to making an exceptional third season. In the interim, we are allowing our in-demand cast to pursue other opportunities."
Euphoria season 3 is the latest installment of the HBO original series
Euphoria was a media sensation when it first hit the airwaves at HBO. The series raised the profile of actors like Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, and Maude Apatow.
It garnered controversy for its intensely stark look into teenage dysfunction and delinquency. Main characters like Zendaya's Ruby Bennet were incredibly dysfunctional people who struggled with drug addiction, deep-seated psychological issues, and unhealthy romantic and s*xual relationships.
Critically, the show was well-received during its first two seasons, with both of them getting an 80% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The series was praised for its tackling of dark subject matter, and the performances of Zendaya and the rest of the leading cast members.
However, the series has also drawn scrutiny for its s*xual content, and relentlessly dark tone. In a February 2022 editorial for Refinery29, Katherine Singh wrote about how draining it became to watch a series that was so relentlessly bleak, saying:
"Watching my sister have such a physical and visceral reaction to a fictional episode of TV wasn’t only alarming, but eye-opening, making me evaluate whether or not I want to engage with these types of shows, and face these scary realities on screen at all. And TBH, the answer is no."
Euphoria season 3 is set to enter production in January 2025. The series is available to stream on HBO Max.
