Netflix has come up with an animated series, titled, Exploding Kittens, which is based on a popular card and video game. It originally started as a Kickstarter campaign for a card game and gained significant popularity to become the most-backed project in Kickstarter history. Exploding Kittens then expanded to include a video game and a variety of board games.

Netflix is further expanding it into a series and announced it in April 2022, a month before the mobile game was adapted for Netflix Games. With voiceover by Tom Ellis and Sasheer Zamata, the series made its debut on the streaming platform this July 2024.

Is the Netflix series appropriate for kids? Exploding Kittens show age rating explored

The animated series is rated TV-14 in the United States, which means that it's not appropriate for children under the age of 14.

The FCC cautions parents to monitor children watching this program and advises against letting children under the age of 14 watch it, especially without adult supervision. Programs with a TV-14 rating contain intensely suggestive dialogue, strong language, and even sexual situations and violence.

Exploding Kittens is rated MA 15+ in Australia, R16 in New Zealand and M18 in Singapore.

Why is the show unsuitable for children?

The Netflix animated series contains mild sex and nudity content. There's blurred male nudity in the first episode and even suggestive moaning in one of the episodes. There are also kissing scenes and suggestive language, for example, "God" describes unicorns as "ponies with face boners".

The show also features moderate violence and gore. There's a scene where a child is killed by a flame ball and sent to hell. There are also kids shown playing violent video games with gunshots, blood and guts exposed.

In one particular scene, there's an animal getting impaled and guts exposed. There are also characters getting incinerated and a Unicorn getting eviscerated and decapitated.

The series also features moderate profanity with multiple scenes where the middle finger is shown without censor, and curse words are used, which are however censored.

There are even a few frightening and intense scenes, for example when one of the characters transforms into a monster-like state to scare animals. There's a large dinosaur-like creature causing havoc, and it's raining Blood in a scene. Moreover, characters are also implied using pot, and a cat is shown getting high on catnip and hallucinating.

Exploding Kittens is an adult animated series and absolutely not appropriate for kids under the age of 14.
