Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist is an upcoming 8-episode limited series that will be released on Peacock on September 5, 2024. Ever since its announcement, there has been quite some curiosity about the story behind it. As the official trailer made clear about a month ago, the series is “based on some sh*t that really happened,” confirming that the series is based on a true story.

The synopsis of the series on IMDb reads:

“Following his return to boxing after dodging the draft, Ali beats Jerry Quarry. Later that night, hundreds are robbed at his after-party in a massive armed robbery.”

Boasting a star-studded cast that includes the likes of Kevin Hart, Terrence Howard, Don Cheadle, and Samuel L. Jackson, among others, the upcoming series has already created quite a buzz among the fans.

The series is based on a historical incident from the 1970s

October 26, 1970, is a historic day since it marked the comeback of Mohammad Ali. As Ali was taking on Jerry Quarry in the ring, something else was going on in Atlanta. NBC published a report on August 27, 2024, that chronicles the incident.

Gordon Williams aka “Chicken Man” hosted a private afterparty that day. The fun of the party came to an end as a host of armed robbers confronted the guests. The guests were lined up and moved into a basement. They were then stripped down to their last fabrics. The robbers went home with $1 million, in cash and valuables.

J.D. Hudson, one of the city’s first Black detectives on Atlanta’s police force, was entrusted with catching the robbers. Eventually, McKinley Rogers Jr and James Henry Hall were charged with armed robbery.

Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist is a scripted adaptation of the iHeart podcast Fight Night, created by Atlanta-based podcaster Jeff Keating. Keating made the podcast in association with Atlanta producer Will Packer.
