The fifth and final season of 9-1-1: Lone Star premiered on Fox on September 23, 2024. On November 4, 2024, episode 6 of the series, titled Naked Truth, was released. This episode contains an event that will potentially determine the fate of one of the most popular characters of the series: Tommy Vega, played by Gina Torres.

In episode 6, Tommy realizes that she is currently suffering from stage 2B breast cancer. She also tells Nancy, the only colleague who knows about it, that “it’s bad.” This shocking revelation has left fans wondering if Tommy is leaving the show.

However, it is as yet unclear whether Gina Torres’ character is leaving 9-1-1: Lone Star. She and several other people associated with the show have clarified in several interviews that though Tommy is going through a hard time, it does not necessarily mean that she will be written out of the series.

Why do fans think Gina Torres is leaving 9-1-1: Lone Star?

Episode 6 of season 5 contains a plot element that starts off as a strange incident but soon snowballs into something far more concerning. In the episode, Nancy accidentally ends up sending her n*des to her coworkers.

Spotting a lump in her breasts, Tommy asks Nancy to go see a doctor. Eventually, both of them go for a test. When the mammograms arrive, it appears that Nancy’s lump is benign, whereas Tommy is suffering from breast cancer. She confides in Nancy only, telling her:

“I was on a call with my doctor about my mammogram. She said that they found something… it’s bad.”

Further, in the promo to episode 7 of season 5, Tommy is seen collapsing onto the floor, unconscious. Thus, it is quite clear that her health is deteriorating fast, and her cancer might as well be life-threatening. Due to these reasons, fans of the show think that Gina Torres’ character is leaving 9-1-1: Lone Star.

Is Gina Torres really leaving the show?

As of now, it is hard to say whether Tommy’s cancer is serious enough to kill her by the end of season 5. Over the past few weeks, several interviews given by Torres and other artists associated with the show seem to suggest that Tommy will survive, after all.

On September 30, 2024, Torres said the following to TV Insider during their 9-1-1: Lone Star after show called First Response:

“We all make it to the end of the season, so let me just put everybody at ease right away.”

This is not the only assurance that has come regarding the matter. For instance, Tim Minear, one of the creators of the show, spoke to TVLine on October 27, 2024, discussing whether Tommy could move over to 9-1-1 or to the second spinoff of the show currently in development at ABC. Minear stated the following:

“I have no current plans for that but it’s not impossible.”

Thus, the shocking intrusion of the cancer might just be a means to test the tenacity of Tommy’s character and not meant to pave the way for her exit from 9-1-1: Lone Star.

On November 11, 2024, executive producer and co-showrunner Rashad Raisani told EW that part of why they wanted to do the cancer-storyline with Tommy was that she is the character who “least wants to admit that she can't do something.”
