Girls5eva season 4 was canceled by Netflix in December 2024. This news broke out with Busy Philipps, one of the show's stars, talking about the show's uncertain future on her podcast, Doing Her Best. The musical comedy, which was given a new chance on Netflix, won't be continuing with another season.
While addressing the cancelation of Girls5eva season 4, the actress mentioned:
“It’s dead. Yeah. I’m just saying it because, f*** it, if Netflix won’t, I will.”
“I guess not enough people watch, watched it, or watched it the way that counts or I don’t know. I actually just don’t know,” she added while talking about the reason for the cancelation.
Girls5eva was created by Meredith Scardino and first aired on Peacock in May 2021. The show is about four women who were once in a girl group and decided to get back together years later to try and become famous again.
After two seasons on Peacock, Netflix picked up the show for its third season, which was released in March 2024.
Why was Girls5eva season 4 cancelled?
The cancelation of Girls5eva season 4 is mostly because of lackluster viewership performance on Netflix. Although Netflix never officially announced the show's fate until December 2024, Philipps had hinted at its uncertain future months earlier.
Philipps explained that the agreement between Netflix and the cast was set up differently from usual TV contracts.
Unlike most shows, where actors need to be told about renewal or cancellation by a certain date, Girls5eva season 4 agreement did not include such stipulations.
“Netflix isn’t saying that it’s dead, but they don’t have to say anything,” Philipps said, adding, “We didn’t have that deal structured.”
The show's cancellation comes despite its critical acclaim and dedicated fanbase. The third season, which premiered in March 2024, received positive reviews for its witty writing and music.
However, less viewership and not being able to attract a bigger crowd seemed to influence Netflix’s decision when it came to Girls5eva season 4. Philipps mentioned that the cast and creators remain eager to continue the series in some capacity:
“We would kill to do more, whether it’s a movie or a final season.”
Netflix’s decision to pick up Girls5eva after Peacock canceled it made fans hopeful for more episodes. However, fans noticed that Netflix didn’t do much to promote the show or change its approach to attract more viewers, which might have contributed to the series’ struggles.
Even though Girls5eva season 4 was canceled, the show remains a favorite among its loyal viewers, who continue to call for its revival.
How did Girls5eva season 3 end?
The Girls5eva season 3 finale ends the group’s Returnity Tour with personal growth and unexpected resolutions. The episode focuses on their last performance at Radio City Music Hall, which happens to be on Thanksgiving.
Despite facing financial troubles and the pressure to sell out the show, Summer uses a smart trick with bots to fill the venue, letting the girls perform for their loved ones.
The final episode wraps up some personal storylines. Dawn, influenced by Richard Kind’s character, writes a new song called The Middle Time.
Gloria, confused about her love life, finally understands her feelings for her ex-wife, Caroline. Meanwhile, Wickie ends up raising funds by selling her documentary idea, only to realize she doesn’t need the validation she sought.
The emotional climax occurs when Dawn unexpectedly goes into labor during the finale, giving birth to her daughter, Lesley. The show ends with a musical note, as Wickie's song Yesternights is featured in the Girls5eva-universe version of The Crown, making it popular again.
At the very end, Wickie receives an offer, however, the fate of the group is left hanging for a resolution in future seasons.
