The Big Bang Theory was a hit sitcom that ran for 12 seasons between September 24, 2007, and May 16, 2019, on CBS. The series was created, written, and executive produced by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady. It featured 279 episodes in total and won several accolades during its highly-successful run.
The series followed the lives of two socially-awkward physicists, Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki). The duo navigated career achievements, romantic relationships, and changing friendships while working at Caltech.
As per Netflix, here's the show's official logline:
"Physicists Leonard and Sheldon find their nerd-centric social circle with pals Howard and Raj expanding when aspiring actress Penny moves in next door."
The CBS comedy inspired two spinoff series - Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage. The former was a prequel series based on Sheldon Cooper's early life and ran for seven seasons from 2017 to 2024. Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage is an upcoming sequel to Young Sheldon and is set to premiere on CBS on October 17, 2024.
Announced back in April 2023, the third spinoff series will further expand the world of The Big Bang Theory.
It’s still prenatal" — The Big Bang Theory co-creator Chuck Lorre talks about the new spinoff series
On April 12, 2023, it was announced that a new spinoff series of The Big Bang Theory was being developed for HBO Max. The news was made public during the Warner Bros. Discovery’s press day presentation.
The show will be executive produced by The Big Bang Theory co-creator Chuck Lorre via his company, Chuck Lorre Productions. While speaking to Variety in July 2024, Lorre assured fans about the arrival of the highly-anticipated project and mentioned:
“It’s still in the works, it’s endlessly in the works. It’s still prenatal.”
On October 10, 2024, inside sources told Variety that the new project will bring back three familiar faces from the original cast of The Big Bang Theory.
Kevin Sussman, who played the comic book store owner Stuart Bloom, is set to reprise his role in the spinoff series. Stuart was friends with the guys as they frequently visited his comic book store and slowly, he became a part of their friend's circle. He also went on a few dates with Penny and Amy.
Kevin made his first appearance in season two of the series and was a recurring cast member until season seven. He was promoted to series regular in season eight and made over 80 appearances on the CBS show, including the finale episode.
The second confirmed cast member is Lauren Lapkus, who played Denise in eight episodes across seasons 11 and 12 of the original show. Denise was the assistant manager at Stuart’s comic book store and began dating him at the start of season 12.
Brian Posehn is also confirmed to return as the geology professor, Bert Kibbler. He won the 2016 MacArthur Fellowship and worked alongside the guys and Amy at Caltech. Brian made 15 appearances on the original series, starting with season six episode 18 and ending with the series finale episode.
Lastly, the project is currently in the development stage and has not received the greenlight to go into production, as of this writing.
Is Raj Koothrappali going to headline the new spinoff series?
In September 2024, Kunal Nayyar set fans' hearts racing by sharing a picture of himself dressed as the astrophysicist Raj Koothrappali from The Big Bang Theory. On his Instagram Story, he captioned the picture, "Remember this guy?," without any further explanation.
The caption and timing of the post led many fans to wonder if the third spinoff series will be headlined by the adorable astrophysicist. Raj is the only character from the show to not get a conclusive ending, vis-à-vis his romantic and professional life. It would be interesting to see if the makers decide to explore Raj's future in depth in the new spinoff series.
However, it must be noted that no official confirmation has been made regarding the return of Kunal, or any of the show's core members.
